Born in 1259, Critias is an Aquitanian, originally from the city of Genoa. His skin is burned dark from many years under the sun, and it is common knowledge in his mercenary troop that he spent some years in the east of the Empire, in the province of Antioch. He has a military bearing and a familiarity with horses that suggests he was a soldier in the heavy cavalry there, but he does not speak of his time in the desert. The fact that he is in the prime of his years, but is a down-at-heels mercenary suggests that his service in Antioch did not end well - one might surmise that he is either a deserter or was discharged without honour from his post.
He does not take much care of his appearance, generally looking unwashed and unshaven. But he looks after his weapons and armour meticulously, even though there is nothing obviously special about them - spoils of war he has picked up along the way. His shield has been painted black and bears no emblem, but battle scars across it show that once there was some heraldic device underneath.
