Background: Not fleshed out yet. Hakon is a Skald, a follower of the old Norse religion. More inclined towards poetry than music, he should still be a skilled musician. While educated and trained as a diplomat, he sees himself primarily as a warrior, and one who inspires other warriors in battle. Has nothing but contempt for the traditional "hang in the back and use missile weapons or a rapier" rogue-type bard. While capable in court, he dislikes it; a courtier has little opportunity to reach Valhalla.
Don't have a good grasp of the Nordic culture in this campaign, so his position in society is still nebulous. I see him as a man wandering and seeking to make a name for himself (and incidentally make his fortune). Considering the level of training and education he has, his family is likely noble. All I know right now is his father's name is Bisi Snorrason. Hakon has a number of possible meanings, one being 'born of battle' and Bisi means 'battle leader'.
To do list: Find Hogni Avenge Father and Atli Repay debt to Jedvar (1 year service) * earn Skaga's respect Find out why Skaga is in the North Find and kill Count Reneir Overthrow Jarl Udriccson Drive out the invading Jotuns Free Udriccson's hostages Reunite the North Slay Arling Slay Hertung Arlingson Break the curse on Skaga IronLoch Destroy the great black dragon Sulhorn and reclaim the Blackmoors for men and elves. Valhalla

Conversation with the Twins
Hey Kruller, this is Rasgorn from Reluctant Heroes and I was reading over the thread and realized I forgot to post Hothor and Hothbrod's answer to your question "Tell me something, what do you know about what Grishnak and Skylla are up to? Why is that great, hairy swamp rat so eager to be friendly all of a sudden? ---------- Both men are silent for a time, struggling with their memories and fears of Grishnak for several moments, when Hothbrod, who had been silent up to this point looks up at Hakon and says "I don't know what Grishnak plans, but you are not the first humans he has traded with from this beach. Usually they are southerners and celts who come, but sometime it is Udricson or one of his earls and RogueWolf was here last week. They always come for the salt we dredge out of the swamps. Grishnak has other items to trade, but salt is the main thing that brings trade." It is then that Hothor starts talking again, "we've seen Grishnak fight several battles and over a dozen skirmishes with the WhiteSnakes and their allies, the magyar. Grishnak has never lost, even though he is always outnumbered. He cleverly chooses swampy ground full of stumps and rotting dead fall when fighting them. The magyar horse loose all their speed in the muddy ground and the urokoi are unable to form a solid shield wall with the stumps and all. Grishnak also had Skylla as an ally. We don't know who or what she is, but one time she gave him a small branch that shot fire. Grishnak used it to kill a flying ogre and about thirty of the WhiteSnakes. This Skylla, calls Grishnak into the swamps. He usually goes alone. None of the other bugbears or humanoids in his tribe have the courage to go with him. Twice he has taken thralls to her and come back alone. That's really all we know. Grishnak can summon almost two hundred other bugbears and several black skinned marsh trolls when he has need. Usually though, he only travels with a few others."
That's all they had to say. If Hakon wants to question them further, feel free to do so in thread.

Item details from Snorvgar's hoard
23. A suit of +2 Nolderin chain that also acts as a cloak of elven kind. Neither Ringler nor Thorvald can fit into it.
Just to confirm, Nolderin chain is in fact elven chain made by forest elves? The Nolder and the Sylvan elves living in the Forests are two different people. For RH sake, consider the Nolder closer to the Gray elves in regard to type. This armor's base AC is 20, with the +2 that makes it AC 22 with the bonus +2 also added to all SA. The armor also creates a 20% spell failure for casters wearing it. The armor is light and flexible and allows Dex bonus up to +4. A person with a 16(+2) wearing this would have an AC of 24.
The ring of Dwarven protection is drow make crafted by the smiths of House Torimtar five years ago. The ring allows the wearer to detect dwarves or dwarven crafted stonework up to 120ft away. The wearer gains a +3 on SA dwarven cast spells and dwarven crafted items and can comprehend languages twice a month.

The story of Count Reneir:
Sorry lost my original but here you go :o)
A story heard by Hakon long ago over a now forgotten campfire.
Long ago over a hundred years ago the witches of hellfire swamp within the lands of Gascony subverted the lords of the surrounding lands taking control. It was said that the witches had made a coven with the devil and from him were born his off spring. Of one of these off spring came Damona who became the most powerful of the coven and their queen. Dealing threw forces of shadow and darkness the witches one by one subverted the ruiling lords of gascony gaining control of the surrounding lands in secret.
One lord managed to free himself from the clutches of the coven and fled for help. The church of the west sent a witch hunter the Count Girard la Fauconnière. The count began to capture and burn at the stake the witches of gascony one by one threw guile, trickery, cunning and raw brute force. It soon became clear that the witches influence spread far and wide and was growing in other legions of the west led by their queen. Taking a force of thirty skilled hunters and priest the count led his men into the hell fire swamp. Of all those to go in only the weakened count returned to tell of the witch queen’s demise. Though he had not escape unscathed forever haunted, having appeared to physically aged over thirty years his hair turned the color of snow.
The count retired a hero to his lands within Burgundia soon marrying a beautiful wife. The church had awarded him a golden jewled cross for his efforts. Intent on living out the rest his life in peace and repentance the couple had a child and the lords lands prospered. Though it is said before she died the witch queen Damona layed a curse upon the count. Often at night he would have terrible vicious nightmares awaking in a cold sweat screaming. The count began to go mad so much that his wife had to take over in administrating his lands. Then one day his wife said in the middle of the night he suddenly rose up out of bed and left. Witnesses latter reported seeing the count heading for the near by sea cliff. After the count went missing search parties were sent out and all that was found a week later along the rocks of the cliff side was the counts golden cross which was latter stolen from the family‘s home.
It is said on nights of the full moon where there is a fog, that the count’s tortured spirit might be seen retracing his steps towards the cliff side, or even about to jump. His tortured wails heard over the crashing surf on the rocks below. That those who should see him find themselves similary cursed to repeat his own suicide their bodies found broken on the rocks beneath the cliff or never found at all. The curse has stuck with the male heirs of the count and shortly after their 40th birthday madness takes them and they take their own life much like their ancestor.

Notes on Lady Ricula:
Hakon knows something of a Lady Ricula. She is rumored to be King Louis' the Fat's mistress and hated by the Queen and King Louis's traitorous sons, Armand, the Crown Prince and Roderick, the prince of Rouen. Hakon has heard that all three have at times offered ransom for Ricula's capture or proof of death. The highest bounty was 2,000 gold, supposedly offered by the Queen herself. He even knows a few men who went 'viking,' with her capture in mind. One returned empty-handed and poorer for his efforts, and the other died. Whether Ricula actually killed him or not is unknown. Watching her hold her blade, he is certain she could have done it. Also, watching her, seeing her, Hakon would seriously doubt she would be anyone's mistress. She doesn't strike him as someone who would take second place to anyone, even a Queen.
The other story he has heard about her involves Cyneburh, the one time Duchess of York. Cyneburh is an elffriend and as Duchess of York always fostered good relations with them. Unfortunately for her, many of the saxons and cross-loving Danes in her kingdom did and still don't care for elves. There was an uprising and Cyneburh almost lost her life. It was mentioned that a Ricula fought and aided in her escape, disappearing in the vastness of Sherwood Forest. Hakon would guess that Ricula probably guards the King's mistress, rather than is one, it could be true to though, he has seen stranger things.

More lore:
Ricula’s mention of Ravanna the Red would have caught Hakon’s attention. She is a legend in the North. One time she was a priestess/sorceress of Freyja. She was good and kind and caring and did much to help her people and was one of Bjorn Swift-Axe’s closest friends and counselors, along with his wife, Rota Regenlief the Valkry. When the Black Plague came north, the same plague that decimated the peoples of the south, it was Ravanna who traveled to the elves of Albion and made friends with them and brought home elven knowledge of healing and curing disease. That knowledge prevented the plague from devastating the people’s of the north. Due to Ravanna’s friendship, the elves opened up trade with the norse, something they didn’t do with any other people. This allowed many norse traders to gain huge advantages in markets in the South and Miklagard and beyond. Ravanna was also said to be a defender of children and fostered many orphans and built what would be considered an orphanage, the first and only of it’s kind in the North. Later, Ravanna turned evil, corrupted by something called Pohjola’s Talon in the north, more commonly known as the Hand of Vecna. Pohjola was Louhi’s son, Louhi is an evil witch who roams the frost lands north and east of Finnland. She is said to be an incredibly evil, powerful, and knowledgeable witch. Shireen could easily have served her. Ravanna was turned by the Hand and committed some horrendously evil acts. She also called down a typhoon on Halfgrim’s village, killing many women and children as well many of his warriors and priests. Ravanna was later hunted down by Rota and Bjorn. She had enough strength left to fool the Hand into hiding on the shoals of beach where she knew Rota would find her. Rota then killed her best friend and took the Hand. Hakon has heard rumors that Rota is now on a quest to destroy the Hand, along with Queen Sigmae of Lorraine. Many of the other names and people he is not so familiar with as they are mostly southerners. He does know of Rugen and would consider him an untrustworthy man. He has courage and skill as a warrior, but he has taken the Cross and now it looks like he wants a Church Cleric to give him the Kingdom he wasn’t able to gain on his own. Hakon would also know that Rugen and Bjorn are implacable enemies. He also knows about the Cyneburh, the Duchess of York. His father knew her and said she was fair and kind and generous to a fault and without any of the cunning necessary to rule. Hakon also knows that Cyneburh traveled to Riga and other strongholds in the north. She tried to unite the norse traders in an attempt to oppose groups like the Hanseatic League and other trading Ventures from the south. She was not successful, but everyone spoke well of her bearing and kindness. She was later overthrown in York for her friendship with the elves and halfings and norse by members of southern royalty and Clergy. Bishop Remus was among those who aided in deposing her and slaughtering over a thousand demi-humans in York when they took over. That triumphant helped propel Remus to his Bishopric. Hakon also knows that a Prince Roderic of Rouen was involved in the sack and burning as well.
