CP 10 ___________________________________________________________________ Illian is a beautiful grey elven woman, about 5'11 in height and slim in build. She seems weak, but limber. She wears her mahogany colored hair in a simple fashion, with the front sides pulled back into twin braids, letting the rest of her hair fall back to her shoulder blades, the braids meeting above the cascade held with a dark green tie. Her hair shines like silk, and her violet eyes are subdued but colored compared to her pale flesh.
She wears a tan pair of loose pants, a medium green peasant style shirt, and tan, calf-high leather boots of an earthen tone, laced to the top with slightly loopy knots. On her wrist is a bracelet of silver, engraved with her name written in elvish, an identification as much as a piece of jewelry. She wears simple silver earrings, small hoops. She carries a notebook, ink and a pen.

Welcome aboard Illian. Did you have any particular scenarios or story arcs in mind? I'm just trying to figure where we can get you started among the various threads we have running. Have you read any of them? If so, did any catch your fancy?

Horseman said something about sending her to Albion for a story arc starting there. He said she's on the Flemish/Norman border in a town teaching something (though I'm not sure how). She's from York so its a logical standpoint.

Meilandru - we haven't forgotten about you, we're just trying to work out where we can put Illian. There are a couple of options, one of which is going to Albion as you mentioned. The trouble there is that I'm not really set up for elven characters - the elves of Albion are very much in the background, pulling strings - so Illian would have to be an outcast from her people, which might not work for you. More shortly, once we've figured out your storyline choices, then you can pick whichever works best for you.

Illian is already an outcast of her people. because she is mute. grey elves have telepathic ability, she does not. we give her the moniker of silent because she almost truly is.
my last storyline led me through the old forests of elves with the staff of the white tree and the pretty silver/gold dress to do the dance of some name i cant remember right now that was an ancient gift.
I still have to update my character to 3.5, but i dont have the books anymore and have to reacquire them to update.

From the archives...
"Twilight broke over the city, and a child was born. The screams of the mother died down as the child emerged from the body, silent, not crying. It was thought at first that she was stillborn, a tragedy often found among the elves. Though she moved, her limbs stretching toward the ceiling, her mouth emitted no cry. The telepathic elves around her tried to establish the link that would allow them to teach her to speak, but there seemed nothing there to connect to. This was new, and they thought as they cut the umbilical cord that the child would not last a year.
After the child reached her fifteenth year, still crawling around and learning to write, but unable to speak, her parents took her around to the finest schools, the university, the temples, to ask and learn of what prevented her from being able to communicate with them. Alas, they found that she was truly mute, but that, with an extended period of time, it was possible to teach her to speak. The parents took her home, and tried valiantly to get her to say even the most basic of the elven script. Patient they were not, but they did try, hiring special tutors and teachers. In the end, she was only able to utilize a vocabulary of less than fifty words.
But, she did show potential. She mastered the written word, and was strikingly beautiful. She appeared to love music, and began to dance in the most peculiar of fashions. And, she showed the spark of magic within her. She was given special tutors and teachers, began to develop her own language of symbols with her hands, and some people around her began to be able to communicate with her.
But still, she remained an outsider, stared at in public, gaped after. She was good with a bow but lacked the ability to wield a sword. This seemed anathemy to these proud people, and when she was old enough, she was given a certain amount of equipment and permission to leave the isles to find a purpose for her life. They send her to the College of York. Perhaps there, she could find a place to belong. It was the home of the half-elves, but nonetheless, it was a place to begin from.
It was here that she learned to love paper. She trained herself in magic, her incantation strange and unintelligible, her somatic movements interpreting words of the spell with her hands. She knew very few spells, but was able to use each of them a great number of times, or so it seemed to her. She learned to make magic scrolls, with the spells she knew, so that others might be able to cast them, and she could earn some money. She worked as a scribe, making scrolls and earning her keep in the college, sleeping in a room in a forgotten tower of the school, in a room that held her memories.
It was time to learn.
She spent her days in the school, scribing and learning. She spent her nights in some taverns or on the protected streets, dancing for pleasure, maybe a coin or two. She slept in this mossy tower, and wrote a diary. It seemed to be a full life. But it never seemed enough."

Her hair shines like silk, and her violet eyes are subdued but colored compared to her pale flesh.
She wears a dark purple, tight skinned body suit that unbuttons down the front, a dancers form. Over that, she wears a simple silk robe, very similiar in color to the skinsuit. She wears simple sandals, white in color of leather. On her wrist is a bracelet of silver, engraved with her name written in elvish. An identification as much as a piece of jewelry. She wears simple silver earrings, small hoops. She carries a backpack of simple things, and carries around a staff, a notebook, ink and a pen."

Excerpts from the chronicle of the Finding of the Dance of the Mallorn:
"As Illian looked through the library trying to find any material that would perfect the Mend Spell she found a volime out of place in the library. It was titled 'The Dance of the Mallorn'.
The volume should have been in the entertainment and exercise section of the library, but had been misplaced and it seemed like some time ago. The Volume was filled with drawing and sketches of a dance Illian had never seen, The Dance of the Mallorn. Included in the volume was every detail about the dance, costumes, hair styles, make up and sheet music. The volume was written in the ancient Noldorin Language of the Elves."
"While doing background research on her Mend spell Illian finds a book that is out of place in the library, the book is titled 'The Dance of the Mallorn'.
The book shows a dance that Illian has never seen or heard of before and it goes through the life of the Mallorn Tree. The book includes the movements of the dance, as well as sheet music."
"The book explains the sacred and ancient dance of the Mallorn. The costume is detailed, a cloak of green on one side, and silver on the other. Under that cloak is a shear dress of vibrant gold.
The dress is designed to be used in the dance to show a years cycle of the Mallorn. The green and silver cloak symbolizing the leaves, which is shed near the climax of the dance when dress of gold is revealed as does the Mallorn leaves change."
OOC:
Reading, and Learning this dance will take Illian about a month.
With costume and reading this book you receive a +6 to Perform Rolls for this dance when performing in front of elves, +4 Half-Elves, +2 humans.
You now know the Dance of the Mallorn, but still need a costume made.

Gibbon, what adjustments to her inventory do we need to make for her having been in one place for so long? I think the rations will have gone bad or something, but the lamp oil, the ink, the paper? And how many scrolls can I say it is feasible for her to still have, or have scrolled more?
also, was i correct in assuming that the amount of money I have wouldn't pay for a good horse, or are they really less expensive than I think they would be?

Let's assume Illian will still have all her equipment, including the scrolls she started with, except for the rations which I agree would have gone bad by now.
To scribe more spells, you can use the following rough formula:
Zero level / First level spells:
Cost to scribe in GP: 12 gp 5 sp Cost to scribe in XP: 1 XP point Time to scribe: 1 day
Note this is assuming that the spells will be cast at first level (so Mage Armor would be +4 AC for an hour). To cast them at 5th level (e.g. Mage Armor lasts for five hours) then multiply cost to scribe in both XP and GP by five (or the level you want to cast them at).
Second level spells:
Cost to scribe in GP: 75 gp Cost to scribe in XP: 6 XP points Time to scribe: 1 day
This is assuming that the spells will be cast at third level.
Full details on the Wizards of the Coast site but this should give you a rough guide. In eight years Illian has had plenty of time to scribe extra scrolls, so the constraints will be GP (and maybe XP costs). Plus she will have to figure out how to transport them!

btw horse prices (in Corbie) are the same as in the PHB. A light horse, plus saddle, bit, bridle, saddlebags etc costs around 100gp.

Illian will make 4 scrolls of Alarm at level 4 (200 gold and 16 XP)
Also, 5 scrolls of scorching ray at level 3 (375 gold and 30 XP)
Also she has a scroll organizer, which i think can carry 30 scrolls for instant access. Everything else goes into scroll cases. I got the item from tome and blood, which i no longer have access to. so I'm not completely sure.

Hm - I keep thinking Illian is a wizard rather than a sorceress, and sorcerors don't get second level spells until fourth level, so I messed up. Scribing costs for 2nd level spells are actually as follows:
Cost to scribe in GP: 100 gp Cost to scribe in XP: 8 XP points Time to scribe: 1 day
- meaning that five Scorching Ray scrolls will cost 500 gp and 40 xp. Sorry...and to add to the bad news, a scroll organizer can only carry 15 scrolls, assuming one spell per scroll.
So this may change things, but either way, just go ahead and update your character sheet when you've decided on what to take.

I've never actually used or implemented the Skill Focus: concentration that I have identified as a feat. before i go looking, is there anyway I can replace that with something more useful or would you have considered her having that for too long since that came over here from the old boards?

Did you decide not to make that feat change in the end?
Also, I've just noticed Wilderness Lore is a deprecated skill in D&D 3.5. It's been replaced by Survival, so you might like to swap it out for that - if that fits what you were using it for. Survival is a practical skill though, so if you intended Illian's Wilderness Lore to be more theoretical - knowledge learned from books as to what berries grow where, or what creatures live in woodland environments, for instance - then Knowledge (Nature) might be more appropriate. Or we can leave it as it is. Let me know your thoughts!

Just noticed all these elven languages Illian can read/write. I don't even know what a Riparian Elf is so I can guarantee you'll never need to use that language :)
I would suggest we boil the elvish languages down to High/Grey Elven and Sylvan. Grey Elven is the formal communication of Elvish written words, in the same way that most formal human texts are written in Ancient Aquitanian (i.e. the RH equivalent of Latin), whereas Sylvan is a more common written language. There are various dialects of these languages though, so Illian might have trouble understanding elves from different areas.
If you want to drop these two variations (Riparian and Salian) then this means you have two written languages you can take. I'd suggest Frankish for one (i.e. Norman) and that you then pick another from:
- Saxon - Aquitanian (modern Aquitanian texts are written in this, but most formal docs including religious texts are written in Ancient Aquitanian which you already have, and you will be able to make sense of modern Aquitanian reasonably well anyway because of this) - anything else you can think of that might be relevant - Flemish, Draconic, Gaelic, Gothic, Uruk, Dwarvish, Stygian (Aegyptian), Iberian, Norse are all possibilities.
In any case, as she is a librarian and a scholar, Illian will have a shot at deciphering most written languages anyway, but we'll just play that by ear using her Knowledge - History and/or Research skills with a DC modifier for languages as appropriate.
Sound OK?
