FALLGIRN, DWARVEN STRONGHOLD

Overview:

Fallgirn -- "Mountainhold of the Strong" -- is a fairly small community of dwarves dedicated to Gond, the god of the forge. Situated deep inside Torgyth, the Mine of Souls, Fallgrin is home to some of the hardiest and most headstrong dwarves in Cavectra.

Description

"Well, I was in the old Mine of Souls one time, tryin' to see if there was any gems left -- pickin' over the bones, you know? Now I most've lost me way or somethin', cause I came upon this little passage. It was well-worked stone, and if y'know the Mines at all you know that that's just not right. So I says to meself, 'Alton lad, there's a golden opportunity in store for you here,' and I head down the corridor.

"Now this corridor is a bit of a plain affair -- normal flagstone, except every so often it's got this queer little bit like a gear with a cross in it carved every so often. So I look at it, and I says to meself, 'Alton lad, I think you're on to something,' and that's when I notice the smell.

"The smell's kinda hard to describe proper, and the best I can do is to tell you that it smelled like burning metal. So I slow down a bit, but I keep going, and then I hear like a 'terk-tingting! Terk tinging!' and I says to meself, 'Alton lad, I think you've stumbled onto a forge of some kind.' Well, blimey if it wasn't even more than that.

"The corridor sorta split in two, with this twoerish thing in the middle -- did I mention that this was a high corridor? No? Well it was. And in the middle was this huge blinkin' tower, crawlin' with dwarves, and one calls out 'Who goes there?' in this big, all-important voice. So I says to meself, 'Alton lad, time to lie,' and I says, 'Oh, I'm just lost in these mines... mind tellin' me where I am?' And the dwarf says, 'You are in Fallgirn.'

"Now, I walk on through, and the next thing I see nearly causes me to faint. The path splits off three ways, and all three head 'downhill.' The left and right ones are lined with houses, but the center...

"Look, take Merchant's Row over there and downsize it to about a block long. Stick it on the frontside of this street. Then add practically every smithy and foundry you've ever seen, all with a gigantic furnace in the midle, and you'll get some idea. But realize that when I say 'gigantic,' I'm talkin' about the size of the Tower of the Guild of Blinkin'-High-and-Mighty Fool Casters over there, also known as the Royal Wizards' Guild Tower. And all around it were dwarven smiths hammerin' away.

"I didn't see much else but one thing. On the other side of the collosal cavern this was all carved out in, there was this round plaza, with a building shaped like a gear lying on the ground in the middle. It had a steel some on it, and I'd bet my shirt that it dhad four engraved spokes -- I was too far to see proper. A buncha paeople in robes were moving about it, but what got me the most was the handful of warriors trainin' there.

"Now right then I'm thinkin' that I might have bitten of a bit more than I could swallow, y'see. So I says to myself, 'Alton lad, you'd better buy yourself a guide to the surface and haul halfling out of here.' And that's exactly what I did."

--Alton Duckgallows, halfling rogue

Statistics:

Population: 131. Most are smiths, with a few clerics and soldiers mixed in.

Alignment: Lawful good. The laws of the clan are shared with most other dwarves, and evil doesn't last long in this headstrong group.

Leadership: Tribal council with theocracy, lawful good. The council is made up of the four clan leaders and a priest of Gond.

Notable NPCs:

Eriess, head of the council and the Stone clan (LG female aristocrat)

Delerl, head of the Metal clan (LG male expert)

Bazauk, head of the Fire clan (LN male warrior)

Bofdin, head of the Forge clan (LG male expert)

Belia, second priestess of Gond and clergy representative on the council (LN female cleric of Gond)

Falli, chief priest of Gond (NG male cleric of Gond)

Major industries: Smithing. Some of the best worked metal on Cavectra comes from Fallgirn, though none but the dwarves know it.

Imports: Food, raw ores, gems, fuels.

Exports: Worked goods -- everything from horseshoes to hand-grenades. (Seriously -- they figured out this great bit using compressed alchemist's fire inside a throwable shaped charge.) Magic items as well.

Religion: Gond, although a few of the older members worship Moradin as well. Since the community is rather insular, the only other gods are those of outlanders.   This post last edited on 4/12/2006 11:18:02 PM   Like this post
