Hakon gives silent thanks to the nameless Erlkönig for whom his armor was made as its links barely hold against the hag's vile fangs. Heartened by his initial success, he attacks with powerful broad strokes, seeking to behead the hag and end the fight quickly. Unfortunately, such powerful blows are easily evaded by a canny opponent.

Hakon lets loose a broad, slow moving, sweep with Gilkir. The Hag watches him and it feels like time slows down for her as she sinously moves out of the way and a dark bolt of light streams from her hand, hitting Hakon in the sternum. He immediately has trouble breathing and almost falls over from weakness, his blade sinking into the soft ether. The Hag starts to turn to towards Thorvald, her red eyes burning with hateful triumph and suddenly dimming in shock as Thorvald strikes her with Issbrandr, cutting deep into her shoulder. The Hag visibly shrinks from the blow, growing smaller and more desperate.
Hakon presses his attack despite feeling an emptiness in his arms. It shows though as his attack is slow and glances harmlessly off the Hag's foul skin. Thorvald still full of anger brings Issbrandr down on the Hag's skull, knocking her back and creasing her dark skin as his blade bites into bone. The Hag screeches, a high wailing sound from the pain and shock and bright red darts of fire fly her eyes, striking Thorvald's head and chest. The Hag follows that with a snakelike snap of her head trying to bite Thorvald's jugular. He clubs her with his forearm knocking aside her attack as he sets his feet and the Hag's attack falters as Vilne' hurls his spear into her groin. She steps back and starts spewing a greenish, foul smelling smoke from her mouth.

OOC-Hakon lost 7pts of strength from the Ray of Enfeeblement spell and Thorvald took 13 points of damage from a magic missile.

Thorvald's eyes widen in amazement as the hag's seid arrows slam into his head and chest. Thorvald feels it not. He spits to show his disgust at the creature's futile attacks. Coward!, he yells at the top of his lungs. Enough seid! Fight!

As he yells the last, the hag vomits forth a greenish gas. Its smoky tendrils curl strangely in the darkened air of this nether world. Hakon yells and jabs his sword at the ugly crone. Facing an unknown attack of unguessed-of power, Thorvald does what any raging Northman would do - he attacks.

Hakon and Thorvald can both feel the smoky gas seeping through the links in their armor creating a burning itch along their skin. The fumes scald their tongues, lips, and mouths when they breathe, both men feel the need to vomit as their eyes blur with tears and they can feel their reddening skin start to slowly swell. Hakon fears he has already breathed in too much of the poisonous gas and hurtles forward, sword pointed like a spear and impales the hag with his desperately fading strength. Gilkir rams all the way through the Hag, skewering her from hip to hip, green and gold sparks flying from the wound as Gilkir's magic burns the Hag. She gives out a loud moan as she steadies herself from the wound trying to weave another spell around Thorvald. It does her little good as Thorvald gives in to his rage and rashly plummets into the gas and the Hag's reach, stabbing her through the chest with Issbrandr as she lunges, snapping her razor sharp teeth deep into his collarbone. Thorvald feels instantly dizzy and weak, stumbles with the dead Hag draped across him. Her teeth sunk so deeply in his shoulder, he drags her with him. Thorvald sees Hakon through the eerie green mist, feels Vilne coughing and vomiting behind him as he feels himself falling.....

OOC-The Hag is dead, stuck on Thorvald, who took 14pts of damage. Thorvald SA Fortitude, DC 18 against Hag's bite.

Oblivious to the green gas swirling out of the hag's mouth, Thorvald rushes in and attacks with Issbrandr as Hakon does the same. As he enters the cloud he is blinded; his eyes burn. Akkkhhhkak. he hacks involuntarily as the momentum of his charge drives him on. He feels his blade encounter flesh and penetrate deep and almost simultaneously he feels a burning and tearing on his shoulder as well as a great weight pulling him down. He feels weak and he has the urge to vomit.

He moves slowly out of the dissipating greenish gas, for something is weighing him down. He falls to his knees and releases the contents of his stomach onto the black, cold earth. His eyes still burn from the poisonous breath, although he can barely make out the form of Hakon nearby. He hears retching nearby. He still does not realize that the hag is attached to him by her teeth. In a weakened voice he mutters, Hakon...the heart...take heart...Evalia. No more words pass his mouth as a great wave of dizziness takes him and he falls forward, remembering no more...

Eyes weeping uncontrollably, his voice blocked by rising bile, hakon struggles to rise, to retain his hold on Gilkir, currently jammed through iron-hard muscle and bone. No! You will not take us with you, you Hel-spawned bitch! your tale ends, you will not kill one more thing. Weak as a child, he struggles to draw the blade forth, to sever the monster's head and cut off her lower jaw to free Thorvald from the deathgrip of her vile bite. He can feel the poison spreading through his own body. Get up Thorvald. - KAFF - No time to sleep. When did you becHRRRK - KAFF KAFF - become such a woman? Hakon moves like a like sloth, his brain focusing, but his body not responding as Thorvald's eyes lose their focus, Issbrandr drops from his listless hand and he falls forward, landing face first in the strange misty muck. The wetness wakes Thorvald and he barely hears Hakon calling to him. He feels weak and feverish, weaker than ever in his life. Still, he feebly pushes himself up, raising his head above the mist to see Hakon coughing, his face turning red from the gas. Vilne's has fallen over on his side, twitching and grasping at the air. Hakon is sawing with Gilkir in a hard effort to take the Hag's head from it's deadly embrace with Thorvald. It is then that Thorvald looks down as the Hag's dead eyes, staring up at him, it's foul jaws still sunk deep in his shoulder. Thorald feels nothing, no pain, no cold, no heat, almost as if he is floating.
Hakon feels his lungs burning and his throat is scorched from the gas. Wulfhere comes into view and Hakon realizes his own vision is dimming as the saxon's cloth wrapped face comes into full view. Wulfhere's large, powerful hands take hold of Hakon's and together, the two of them cut off the Hag's head. The body sloughs off like a snake's skin as Wulfhere too succumbs to the gas and slumps to a sitting position. Vilne has stopped retching and looks up with blind eyes, feeling his way. He hears Hakon's voice and gropes his way over. He spits out a dark pink, viscous glob and leans his head against Hakon's ribs, and from his burned throat rasps out, What now Hakon, what needs we do now?

OCC-Experience updated, Hakon has lost a point of constitution and Thorvald has lost eight points of constitution.
Secure Rolls:

Struggling to control his voice, trying not to breathe deeply Hakon says, "We've cut down the Hag, now we must break her power. Inside her somewhere, probably where her heart should be, is a stone - a heartstone. We must cut it out and bathe Evalia in its blood to cure her. Help me dig for it.

Once we have it, we'll destroy the Hag's remains with fire and salt and leave this poisoned place.

Glancing over, Hakon checks to see if Evalia's spirit form is still present now that the Witch is destroyed - perhaps she must be bathed in the blood in both worlds.

As Hakon says Evalia's name Thorvald comes to and feebly raises his head, his eyes red and saliva drooling from his mouth. A fine death that would have been, but it is not to be. He raises the upper half of his body with his strong arms and says to Hakon, I hope you're remembering all of this, my friend. A fine song it will make.

Still coughing he gets to his feet and makes his way over to Hakon and the hag's body. Yes, the heartstone! I know of it. Let us cut it out of the bitch's stinking corpse and bring it back.

Thorvald walks over as Hakon glances at Evalia's spirit form. The fiery bird is hard to see in this place, all he glimpses is an outline of the flame bird before it flies up and out of sight. He is heartened seeing it and still feels it's presence even though it's has flown beyond his vision.
Just as Thorvald kneels down to start cutting, he feels Wulfhere touch him on the shoulder, Thorvald, hold still, this will last only a moment, and Wulfhere wraps his hands around the Hag's teeth, still stuck in Thorvald's shoulder and pulls them out. They make an ugly sucking sound as they come out and Thorald suddenly feels lightheaded as some strength returns to him, and healthy red blood flushes the wound, pouring out and down his chest. Hakon can tell this is a good sign the wound is not infected, at least for the moment. Wulfhere gingerly places the jaws next to Thorvald and the three of them cut into the Hag. It is a slow going as their blades dull on the hag's skin and bone and their own arms weaken far quicker than normal. They all have to stop several times just to catch their breath. They find it though, after an hour or so of hard cutting. The heartstone is a deep blue violet color, shimmering with Hag's blood and reflecting it's colors outwards. Wulfhere hands Thorvald and leather gauntlet, don't trust touching it with your skin, use this. I'm going to see to Vilne'. Wulfhere crawls over to Vilne' and looks the Finn over. Hakon and Thorvald can hear Vilne's soft voice in the dimming light as they finish cutting out the heartstone. Hakon can feel power radiating from the stone. It's color warming his skin and reflecting other places in it's numerous prisms.
Vilne' stands up, he is shaky and pale as he looks around and up at the sky. He sees Hakon and Thorvald sitting amidst the gutted corpse, covered in the Hag's blood and skin, and entrails and a slow smile eases across his face and they hear him laugh, Hakon Bloody Mane, you are well suited to your name. If I didn't know better, I'd say it looks like you've gotten Hag's head pudding all over yourself.

Hakon pours the salt he brought over the Hag's remains. Overjoyed that Vilne's blindness was only temporary, he flashes a grin. Ah well, what's a little blood? And not much of it mine this time. Some time in a hot bath to sweat out the poisons and some rest, and we'll be fine.

He looks over at Thorvald Put on the gauntlet, and let's get that thing back to Evalia right away, while it's still wet with blood. Hold it carefully, and don't look at it.

As they begin heading back to the rainbow gate, he muses I hear that hags often travel in threes. Maybe next time there will be enough of them to make it more of a challenge.

Thorvald slips the gauntlet on and gingerly lifts the heartstone from the ruined body of the dead hag. About the size of his fist, the object is surprisingly heavy. He must use almost all of his strength to raise it up out of its bed of offal. The facets of the stone seem to glimmer and reflect an unseen light, for it is dark in the nether swamp. The light from the stone casts eerie shadows across the black earth and waters.

As Thorvald holds the stone carefully, so as not to spill its precious contents, he hears the voice of a strange woman. The language is strange, yet somewhat similar to Thorvald's. He can ken some of its meaning. Beautiful was I once long ago in Aachen in Karl's court. He turns quickly toward the voice. Huh? he says as he looks behind him. There is no one there. He turns his head back and stands. He sees that Wulfhere is staring at him, a questioning look on his face. Thorvald says, It was nothing. I thought I heard something. Sounds travel strangely in this Hel-swamp.

Hakon speaks of hags traveling in threes. Thorvald replies, Let us hope not, old friend. One was enough. I think they like the taste of North men as do most women. Yet these hags are more.....voracious than most women. He nods, smiling, at his wounded shoulder. Yes, let us leave this place and return to the world of light.

He takes a step. Qua sum ego? Quisnam es vos? He stops short. No mistaking it that time. He looks at his comrades to see if they heard anything. Nothing. Then another voice comes to the fore. In broken Norse it rages, You! You are one of them! One of those northern devils. Come to burn, burn, burn! Beautiful Paris now lies in ash and rubble. Butcher! The hatred in the voice shocks Thorvald. He tries to defend himself from the verbal onslaught, I have done nothing, woman! Paris is long gone. The sound of his voice causes his friends to stop their progress toward the rainbow gate. They look at him as though he'd lost his mind. Voices, he says. I hear women's voices.

Then in the distance he hears her voice, his beloved, Evalia. She sounds as though she is struggling, trying to make her voice heard. It is ... stone, Thorvald....the heartstone. Many women ... their souls here. ...bodies ... taken. Victims ... hag. Her voice falters. Another woman's voice yells in Thorvald's mind in a language he does not understand. Quickly Evalia is back. Thorvald, the hag suppressed them before. Now they all struggle to speak. I cannot stop them for long. Thorvald looks up at his comrades and says, The voices. The women's voices come from the heartstone. They are the victims of the hag. Their bodies taken and used for her evil purposes, their souls long imprisoned here now clamor to be heard. Evalia is there among them.

As soon as he finishes speaking, the flood gates open. Thorvald's face wrinkles grotesquely as hundreds of angry women vent their fury in his brain. He begins to stumble, but Wulfhere is at his side, supporting him.

When Hakon mentions Hags traveling in three's, Vilne' and Wulfhere insantly became more wary and concerned. They can't tell if Hakon is joking or not and aren't willing to take any chances. Standing up and looking around, none of them can see the rainbow door Skaga made for them and looking down at the mist covered ground, there are no tracks to be found. Wulfhere looks up and around, searching for something familar to guide them back. Vilne's does the same, only he crouches down now and then, looking for his own footsteps and those of his companions.
Thorvald is not looking around at all, but rather at the Hag's heartstone, a queer and nervous look on his face as he hears voices and in some of the odd reflections he thinks he can see faces. Most of the faces are women, but there are a few men as well. Thorvald only catches a glimpse of them before they are gone. He usually sees the faces in his periphal vision. Anytime he looks directly at them, they disappear, or he sees nothing.
It keeps happening as they follow Vilne', trusting his instincts more than their own in this fell place. Wulfhere stays behind, gently nudging Thorvald now and then when the swede stumbles or stops. Vilne' and Hakon take the lead, frequently looking back. Vilne' is troubled by Thorvald's odd behavior and whispers to Hakon,Do you think he has "hag fever?" My grandmother spoke of it to me in her tales of the troll folk. What do we do if Thorvald has gone mad? I'm not certain I'm ready to fight him, even if I thought we could win. Thorvald stops as Vilne' is speaking and blurts out what Evalia has told him. As soon as Thorvald speaks Evalia's name, the fire bird is there, hovering near his shoulder, it's heat intense and glowing like a pulse. Wulfhere has an odd look on his face as he ponders Thorvald's words and then lays his hand on Thorvalds shoulder, his grip is firm and steady, Then we shall free them as well. First, we must return home. Thorald, we must return home, home to Skaga and Ringler and Evalia. Wulfhere's voice is gentle and even, like the voice you use to quiet a timid or frightened horse. Hakon would also notice his other hand is gripping the pommel of his scramasax in case Thorvald goes beserk and he has to use it.
When Thorvald stumbles, Wulfhere grabs and holds him up, pushing him forward, following after Vilne'. The fire bird flies over Hakon and Vilne's head and they watch it disappear in the distance and then glimpse a small, rainbow hued light where the bird disappeared. Thorvald is struggling to hold the stone and he can hear the Hag's raspy breath and feel her hate. Looking back, he sees her smoldering corpse, burning from the blessed salt and Hakon's fire. The essence of the hag is fading, but what is left desperately clings to life and the souls it has stolen. Thorvald isn't sure, but he sees another Hag reflected in it's eerie light. Long limbed and green skinned she is, moving through a mist.
The four men now stumble desperately towards the light and the faint sounds of Skaga's chanting voice. Hakon almost falls and in the mist he sees dark eyed Hinla and the ogre Gulhoar standing over her. Vilne grabs him and pushes him forward. They can all hear a deep howling sound coming from behind and a rush of wet wind soaks into them. Wulfhere's voice is loud and full of urgency, They come! Hakon! The sisters come! Run! Run!

OOC-Roll SA strength, DC 12 to make it the rainbow or fight the sisters!

OOC: A strength check...nice. I assume Hakon is still Strength 9, since the Hag's Ray of Enfeeblement hasn't worn off yet.

Seeing his companions' concern at his lightly meant words, Hakon reassures them, Don't worry, if her sisters were here, they would have attacked by now. Still, let's hurry away from this place.

He's a bit concerned about the effect the stone is having on Thorvald, but instinctively knows that he is the only one to carry it. The purity of his purpose - his love for Evalia - will protect him. He is about to answer Vilne's question when Thorvald has his outburst. He merely nods in agreement to Wulfhere's sound advice.

Finally approaching the gateway to their return, Hakon is struck by the image of Hinla. It's funny how her shy and smiling face often appears to him in quiet moments. Such a delicate girl, to have survived so much. The image of Gulhoar is a puzzle that brings a frown to his face. Despite Thorvald's feud with the brute, Hakon was always impressed by the way the ogre tried to fit in among men. Has he finally returned to his true nature? Is he about to ravage the helpless girl? Or is he defending her from some enemy? He remembers that Hinla would hide behind Gulhoar's bulk when she felt threatened...

He is standing stock still, lost in thought when Wulfhere's words penetrate the fog his mind is in. Despite the lingering weakness weighing him down, he presses forward strongly. Come on then!

Thorald's head is full with the din of strange voices. He can feel them pounding his senses like the surf violently crashing into rocks. He feels dizzy and can hear the others urging him to run. He briefly senses their panic when Wulfhere half shoves, half lifts him through a gate of swirling color.
Hakon is behind right behind them with Vilne at his side. The Finn has a javelin in hand, ready to hurl at the two hags chasing them. Hakon can see they are too far off to catch them now and as Wulfhere and Thorvald tumble through the door, Vilne's barks like a seal at them, mocking their futile pursuit and shaking their sister's head at them. He laughs and slaps Hakon on the shoulder as the two of them step through...
All four of them gasp with the wet, fetid air of the swamp filling their lungs. Few things have ever felt so sweet. They feel like they can't get enough of it, Thorvald and Vilne' in particular as the air helps cool their burning lungs and scorched throats. All around them, the others stare in disbelief and Hakon can tell they have waited for several days. The early night is full and bright with stars. Mist rises off the lake, covering the ground in a strange, creeping fog. Down by the causeway, they can see a pyre with Evalia lying motionless on top. The fire bird flying weakly in slow circles around her. Near Evalia is another pyre, still smoldering, it's gray ash swirling in the slight breeze, mixing with the fog curling off the lake.
Skaga's gaunt and wizened face comes into view and a deep silence encompasses them as she ceases her spell and her staff stops whirling the shimmering colors of the rainbow into the air. Skaga smiles at them and then her eyes roll back in her head and falls over, almost unconcious from exhaustion. Hakon is surprised and isn't sure if he is dreaming or not when Alf grabs his arm to steady him and looks like he is shouting, Are you well? What can we do now? What do we do now!? Hakon has a hard time hearing, as does Thorvald. Vilne' sits down and coughs up more blood and green ichor, while Wulfhere takes a drinking horn from Gunnar and takes a long draught, trying to slake his thirst and wash away the poison.
Thorvald feels a strong, calloused hand take his and pull at him. He looks down and sees Durthar, Jari, and Valin Surehand all gesturing for him to keep moving, pulling him towards Evalia's pyre. Ringler holds his sword out, looking at the now dissipating gate and then turns to Thorvald and reaches out a hand, Come brother, the longbeards say we must hurry. We go to Evalia, don't stop now, don't let it all end now. Come, I will walk with you.

Staggering a bit, Hakon smiles when the rainbow gate closes before the hag-sisters can follow them through. His voice is a raspy shadow of its usual self. The hag is dead, the witch burned. Let Thorvald bring the stone to Evalia and our victory will be complete. We've all taken a dose of the Hag's poison, so a clean drink and a hot bath will do us the most good.

As the changes that have taken place in camp register, he continues, To us it seemed only minutes have passed. What has happened here while we were gone?
