OOC: This is one of those times... Good roll... good TIME for a good roll; I had all kinds of ideas how she'd react to a natural 1! ......................................
Allison's eyes flash and her face sets in its normal petulant mood. Jerome thinks for a moment she's going to slap him; he actually glances at her hand to make sure it doesn't hold a dagger or other weapon.
But the look of anger begins to melt; her lip quivers and mouth softens, then a lone large tear traces a path from the inside corner of her left eye down the side of her nose to hang precariously on the edge of that trembling lip.
She quickly covers her face with her hands, takes a few gasping breaths to choke off sobs, her shoulders jerking with each.
You're right... .. I'm sorry... I don't know HOW to do ANYTHING...
Its been so HORRID out here, ever since I left home. she forces each phrase out like a sob...
I thought you'd HELP me... I thought... I thought...
Oh, NEVER MIND!" She spins and rushes back to her cot (even the Bishop hadn't been able to convince her to forgo the extra weight and sleep on the ground on a bedroll)
Jerome is left befuddled by the sudden outpouring of tears, he glances round to see Rand wide awake and wide-eyed, obviously similarly impressed by the performance.

Rand was fortunate. He didn't seem to need much sleep. Sometimes he woke up in the middle of the night and stared at the stars above them and listened to the sounds of the night. This night he woke to quiet movement and saw Miss Allison approach Jerome. They were not far from his bedroll as they began to speak. Rand was also tired of Miss Allison's uselessness, but Jerome was more often a target of her personality than Rand was and the older teen broke first.
Rand rose to his elbow, looking towards the two as Miss Allison rose and rushed to her cot. Sharing a look at Jerome, Rand rose and approached Miss Allison. Kneeling by her bedside, Rand spoke quietly and calmly. Miss Allison, calm down. It is going to be OK. We can help you and teach you, all of us will. We thought you didn't want to help, not that you didn't know how. Sometimes it is hard to ask for help, but at some point each one of us needs to do that. You have seen us helping each other in turn. We help Father Thomas prepare a fire for the meal, and in turn he helps us, often hearing water before we do and he listen to the noises of the forest so much better than I can. Jerome is helping me learn to defend myself. I can't say it has helped much, but we are both trying. I can help you, learn how to gather wood and tend the horses. Father Thomas, I'm sure, would teach you to cook with him. He has shared much of that knowledge with me as we have travelled in the past. I must say that those were tasty lessons. Jerome can help you, as will the Bishop. Rand handed Miss Allison a cloth to wipe her face. Now that we know you want to learn, you will have many teachers. And friends.

Jerome was worried as his comments left his mouth. He wasn't sure how Lady Alison would take his words and the look on her face at first made him look for any weapons that she might be able to get her hands on. But then everything changed as she face changed and the tears began. Before jerome could respond to anything that she said Lady Alison jumped up and ran back to her cot leaving Jerome sitting on his bedroll speechless.
Jerome was now not sure what to do next and before he could move he watched Rand make his way over to talk to the sobbing Lady Alison. At this point Jerome can only listen and watch to see what happens next.

All Rand can get is a "Just leave me ALONE!" with a humph as she rolls over and pulls her blanket over her head.
(And he's VERY lucky to have gotten that! She wasn't pre-supposed to be very accepting of comfort at the moment!)
At any rate, no matter what, Jerome and Rand are wide awake now, and the sky has the hint of light that appears an hour or so before the first light of dawn. They'd be waking soon at any rate to pray and to study.
Feel free to take a moment to discuss this turn, and hmmm... what a stroke of luck to have a random encounter when you're already awake and alert...
Secure Rolls: Random Encounter Check 1d100(3) = 3

By mutual agreement, Father Thomas normally takes the last watch - he's usually beat tired by the end of a long day, his age is easy to forget, but at certain points DEMANDS to be heard. But after a night's rest, his long habits of early rising make it easy for him to rise hours before dawn to take the last watch - being blind allows him to pray and meditate while remaining alert to every sound of the forest.
(But he probably won't hear anything until Rand and Jerome discuss Lady Allison's nocturnal visit)

Rand stood quickly when Miss Allison ordered him to leave her alone. He wasnt surprised...he was more surprised to hear she had an insecure side than to be barked at. Rand returned to his bedroll, near where Jerome watched. He looked at his friend and back to the cot Miss Allison insisted on dragging across the rough land. He whispered Well, might be an interesting morning ahead for us...

Jerome watched as rand was dismissed from Lady Alison's side and returned across the camp to his bedroll.
Well, might be an interesting morning ahead for us... Rand commented in a low whisper.
I wonder if I have stirred up a hornest nest my friend. We really could be in for a long day but I figured it was about time that someone said something to her. Jerome replied We have been dealing with this since the caravan rescue and then the delay gettign back on the road. She really should try to help as we are here to protect her as she travels and I can tell you that I won't be at my best if I don't get a goodnights sleep every once and a while.

Rand nods in the darkness. I agreem Jerome. As things stood, I can't imagine it getitng worse, but you never know and I wouldn't bet my last copper on either outcome. Rand layed back down and looked up at the sky. We can pray for a good outcome, but that is all we can do at this point.

Sorry... DM has a ring of anti-protection +50. You're not yet high enough level to overcome that. :-D

Meme falls to her knees in prayer to The One. So does David. And Rand. And Jerome. And Father Thomas. And the Bishop. And all the horses and pack animals. And even Miss Allison.

After praying for what seemed like days, Jerome gave thanks to The One for once again bringing them through the night without any trouble.

Morning comes. The group rises and begins their morning chores. Miss Allison is the last one up, but is up sooner than she had on other mornings. Almost like she tried to cooperate and participate. Rand said Good Morning to which she actually replied.
Rand hummed as he began his chores. After saddling the horses, he looked back towards their campfire and saw Miss Allison sitting and talking with Father Thomas while the old man was cooking breakfast. Another first.
The group left their campsite and continued down the trail. Miss Allison seemed to be slowly warming up. She didn't jump in and fully participate, but her attitude seemed to be softening and she was more often seen talking with Father Thomas during meal preparation.
The road was uneventful. They kept their eyes opened, but except for a few overland trading caravans, the roads were quiet and peaceful.
VERY PEACEFUL.

The peaceful trip continues, but our heroes never lose sight of the gift the quiet trip is. They remain vigiliant. After many days, weeks, and saddlesores, the group rides over a hill and sees the amazing sight of the Ocean stretched out before them.

The road is long, so much longer than they anticipated. They travel well, eat well, and rest well. Day after day. Month after month. Hopefully not year after year.
