Chalon

Bardolf, now called Brother Arn arrived late to Chalon. He and his companions had pushed hard through territory mostly controlled by Duke Vintronus and Bishop Damon the Mad of Reims. Bardolf knows that Damon is mad, a servant of demons, ally of Sydney of St. Albans if not disciple and hungry for power. So much so, he cut off his own hand in hopes of grafting Vecna's Hand to his stub of a wrist. Bardolf was familiar with some of the territory, having traveled and fought through it several years ago with Sir Alexandre Godarte. The ever ready and stalwart Gullveig is with him. She and Gilgoir are always with him, almost like second shadows. For that, Bardolf is grateful, for both have saved his life several times. Elias(paladin of St. Bane and fellow Judicator from Aes Dana)and Arrango(Iriquoi Indian, wears a mohawk), two more of his oldest, most trusted friends have also come with him. Father Hayne is not here. He left to see if he could help save a mortally wounded Sir Alexandre Godarte, poisoned and sickened from bite wounds given to him by Duchess Celicia in her werewolf form. On the way to Chalon, two days out from the city, the ran into Eddard the Judicator. Eddard is a Judicator from Riga, following the Eastern Faith and having a great deal of knowledge about the Judicators and other eastern saints that greatly interest Bardolf and Elias. Eddard is a strange man, if he is even human. He shows no emotion, no laughter, no sadness. He neither condemns, praises or judges them. He is almost inhumanly quiet at times and is conducting an investigation of his own into the attempted assassination of Bishop Jonas Wechsler of Trier and King Phillip of Burgundy. The other strange and frightening thing about Eddard, is he was traveling alone and seemed quiet content and unconcerned, despite traveling through some of the roughest and most dangerous country Bardolf has seen. Eddard reveals nothing about himself or his history. It's like the day he became a Judicator, was the day he was born. They arrived in Chalon just after dusk. The gates had almost closed for the night. Amid the war and the regular howling of prowling werewolves in the forests outside, the gate Sergeant almost didn't let them inside. Luckily he was a kind soul and took some pity on them, ushering them inside and locking the gate for the night. They found shelter in a stockyard loft and all fell quickly asleep. Bardolf wakes up to Gilgoir's gentle licking. He can hear voices nearby. Eddard is talking to someone in Finnish. Bardolf looks around and finds everyone else, except Arrango, asleep. His friend is standing among the horses, hiding himself with their bodies and watching everything around them. You're awake. Tis a good thing Brother Arn. We look to have a busy day. The man's voice is as gentle as his countenance. He is 5-8, 180lbs, with His almond colored eyes have a soft, gentle quality to them. Framed by black curly hair and dark hispanic features(Think of Jim Croce)he smiles at Bardolf in such a way Bardolf instantly trusts the man. Eddard is off on his own today. What are your plans? Sorry, I am Judicator Carillo Diaz of Valencia. I'll help you as much as I can today, but I do have to return to High Vale before noon.

Bardolf rises, more than a little tired from crossing the Troubled Lands. A name he had come to use to refer to the Northern Frankish Lands and Flanders. Part of Bardolf wished he was back in peaceful Albion. It's lush green countryside and the dark brooding forests of Wales. Amongst the Elves life just seemed better. But Bardolf well knew that was not his path. One doesn't choose their path, it is chosen for them.
Patting Gilgoir on the head he reaches into his satchel and retrieves a salted, smoked smelt for Gigoir. The hound had come to love them in Wales, and Bardolf kept a small stash of them for his boon companion. Bardolf had been concerned at first that the salted, smoked fish would foul Gilgoirs fine nose, but still the hound was able to sniff out trouble and proved it many times. Rising stiff boned and chilled, Bardolf picked up his staff and walked over to Carillo.
Bardolf thought I remember you Carillo, you were among those few who managed to win the day at the Battle of Aldane.........but that wasn't right. No, Jamie had mentioned Carillo.
and how is the lady of Genappe? I think I would like to quietly and discreetly make my way to St.Ogmahs Chapel. I want to go unnoticed as best as possible, perhaps as monks or farmers taking crops to the chapel. I need to speak with Bishop Harlon, and the Lady of Genappe as well.

Bardolf's mentioning the Lady of Genappe brings an even brighter, more luminous smile to Carillo. He is so different from the inhumanly stoic Eddard. Bardolf can tell Carillo doesn't just care for Jamie. The man is in love with her. His smile slowly fades to a more thoughtful look,Jamie is doing fine. She has much to consider and even more to do here in Chalon. Soon these troubled times will pass through our efforts, or kill us. Either way, we will be free of them. I can take you to the Binder's Hall. I won't be able to stay long though. I too have errands to run this day. Did you want to bring any of your companions with you? ------------------- Carillo waits patiently while Bardolf assembles everyone and gives them their orders for the day. Carillo then leads them through the streets of Chalon, weaving from one market or street to the next. Everywhere Bardolf feels the tension and anxiety of not just the common people, but many of the Knights and soldiers and mercenaries as well. Chalon has the feeling of a city under siege, yet no army sits outside it's walls like in Trier or Echternach. Even more odd, Lord Cherot, the Commander of the Knight's Templars had just made peace with Lord Morwith and the other rebel lords to the south, ending a long and bitter war. There should be singing and dancing and rejoicing, not this pall of fear and uncertainty. He also notices large numbers of sullen, angry looking vikings, walking around in full battle gear. Carillo would tell them those are the 'Hostage Swords,' mens whose families were taken by Hogni Serpent Hand and now held prisoner. The men's service is how they pay their families ransoms. Bardolf can see the vikings are not the least bit welcomed. For their part, the vikings aren't the least bit happy being here either. They finally reach St. Oghma's Chapel. It's a grand structure with a high ceiling and great wooden double doors opening into the long, narrow sacristy. A short, round bellied man with a ruddy complexion greets them on the stairs. He seems much older than he looks. His gray green eyes look sharp and lively in a leathery cheeked face wrinkled by weather,Good day to you gentlemen. Welcome to Oghma's chapel. I'm Bishop Harlon. If I can be of service, please let me know. It is not often I get to meet such esteemed men.

Bardolf now going completely by the name of Brother Arn replied to Carillo. Arn spoke softly, but with strength in the tone of a parrish priest. The Lady of Genappe is special........We are all better for being graced with knowing her. Keep an eye on her back, there will be much trouble in Chalon before this is settled. I know this will be tough as she is a free spirit and her and he feathered friend accomplish much of what they accomplish by this initiative. However we need to be careful to understand that as we adjust our tactics, so too will our enemy as they learn our strengths and their weakness.
At Carillos question of who I would like to go with me, Arn motions to the group assembled. I would like to get us all into Chalon. My eyes aren't as keen as they once were with all the time I have spent recently hovering over medical texts in candlelight, and my ears are now more tuned to the bells of vespers than the skulking of a spies foot behind me.
Gullveig and Elias are excellent teamster and can drive the wagons. Arrango has been trained from birth to be able to catch the out of place sight, sound or smell; odd movements of animals, birds and changes in the winds. Friar Keth has many campaigns behind him and knows the look in a mans eye when they think they are about to be in a fight.
The rest of us are mere monks, on a pilgramage. Our wagons carry trade goods from Wales, Northumbria, Pictland and the Salisbury plains. We are no different from any other band of pilgrims that can be seen on the roads any given day.
Arn explained it, perhaps reassuring himself. But in fact this group was just that Pilgrims. But the mystery was what was the nature of their pilgrimage.
OOC I want to take all the monks, Bardolf wouldn't want to deprive any of his brothers of taking in the ecclisatic wonders of Chalon.
---------------------------------------------------
Arn had always been a little in awe of the great archetecture and engineering of the church's structures. So much love, care and attention had gone into crafting them. It was clear that it was done for the greater glory of Ogmios. Arn had spent so much time lately reading and writing in Latin that it was natural for him to latinize names like Oghma. This reminded Bardolf that he should spend more time writing in Ogham Script, the ancient language of the Druids.
Bishop Harlon we are pilgrims who have come from The West. Arn used the proper name The West as a code to the Bishop of their origin and something about them. Hoping evesdroppers on the street, if not well educated in lore and history would simply consider it a cardinal direction. Trying to trace back the path might lead them to Gascony and Longshanks, not Albion. We seek entrance into the chapel for prayer, a stable for our mounts. For these meek of gods creatures need rest. However, we pilgrim brothers weary of travel and seek some solitude and daily chores so that we can contribute to your parrish, and to the betterment of our souls.
OOC if admitted inside IC Bishop Harlon, we have come from The West and we bring tokens from there to you.

Bishop Harlon nods at Brother Arn and waves them all inside. Bardolf looks up at the painted ceiling. The others do to, it's hard not to for them. The Saints stare down at them. Painted and scupted into the ceiling are images of all the Canon Saints, patron Saints and seven others. Bardolf only recgonizes St. Etienne and St. Bane, the others are unknown to him. One is definitly gaulic and one looks like a tall, thin moor. The sculptures are simple, yet breathtakingly beautiful and life like. Bishop Halron waits, allowing Bardolf and the others to simply gaze in appreciation. When Bardolf looks his way, Bishop Harlon takes the salmon himself, while having others carry the rest away. He is holding the salmon and looking at Bardolf,This kind of reminds me of the tale where Finn Cumhail burned his tongue. Hopefully I can help you find what you seek in an easier manner. Even though there is no army massed against it's walls like in Trier and Echternach, Chalon is in a state of siege right now. You probably noticed all the soldiers, knights and foreigner swords swaggering about. Have you met with Jamie Boggett yet? He is looking at both Carillo and Bardolf when he asks the question. He is curious and concerned,She was arrested this morning by Lord Cherot and taken to St. Kargoth's Basilica. I've heard she is scheduled for execution at noon. Have either of you heard of this happening? Is it true, or just another of the many rumors swirling about Chalon? Carillo's gentle face hardens and his eyes turn dark and troubled and focused,It's part of her plan. It's part of the errands I have to run. If you'll excuse me, I'll be about them now. Carillo nods and bows respectfully before leaving. Bishop Harlon's face is lined with wrinkles and something in the old priest's eyes tell Bardolf he doesn't believe Carillo knows what's going on. This day is most troubled for certain. Would you be willing to risk the Basilica to see Jamie?

Bardolf takes some time and soaks in the magnificient painted ceilings. Bardolf had become somewhat of a religious art critic over the past many years, it was a growing passion with him. Bardolf looked for hidden nuiances left by the artist. How were the figures posed, did their facial expressions match their physical form, which way were they pointing or reaching out. What were the colors used, did they fit the figure, were there literally hidden items or symbols in the paintings.
Bardolf moves to the side with Harlon, responding to the comment about Finn, Well your Excellency, I wish this were The Salmon of Knowledge, would be a good time to have the knowledge of ages at our disposal.
Bardolf then listens to Harlon talk about the city and Jamie. Bardolf is more than a little shocked to hear about Jamie gambling with her head, he tries his best not to show it, rather putting on a stoic, monastic visage. Jamie plays a perilous game. Why did she think it wise to put her head on the block. Or is she trying for early Sainthood?
I would gladly go and see Jamie, after all she will have to have her last confession heard before the axe falls.

OOC-Here is something about Saints and how they are ordered. Bardolf would have learned this within the first week of Seminary. It's something all clerics and priests should know, but sadly, many do not. 1. Canon Saints 2. Saints of Patronage 3. Saints of Service,(People follow them, they are generally recgonized by other Faiths within the Church but their faith and worship is generally restricted to a select place or group or activity. 4. Local Saints, like Donas, Loricato and such are usually connected to a place and are considered more cults than actual Orders.
IC-Bardolf gazes at the ceiling longer than the others, which is usual. Only Brother Quinces and acolyte Arin remain waiting for Bardolf. All the others have gone off to their rooms or the dining hall. Bardolf would notice slight changes in the hues if not the colors themselves among the depicted Saints. Both Jordain and Kargoth have a darker cast to them, particularly from certain angles. He also notices they are the only two Saints who are not touching another Saint, Canon, patron, or otherwise in the whole scene. They stand close to each other and as Bardolf walks around beneath them looking up, he sees from certain positions and bending of the light what appears to be another figure behind and between the two of them. He can't quite figure out who it is, but he is certain someone is there. He also realizes by their colors, symbols and objects they hold, the seven Saints of Service represent the founding beliefs of the Church: Good is represented by the thin moorish Saint. Honor is represented by St. Etienne,Chalon's patron Saint Truth is represented by the gaulic Saint Justice is represented by Saint Bane Compassion is represented by what he believes is St. Gabriel. She is vaguely elven looking. She is also looking at St. Kargoth. Generosity is St. Ruad Rofhessa, an Irish Saint who closely resembles the ancient celtic Deity the Dagda. Faithfullness is his own namesake, St. Arn. Looking at it the sculpture from different angles, he has two faces, one older and more austere, one younger and full of hope. ----------- Any knowledge that adds to what we have would be most welcome at this time. There is too much confusion and tongue-wagging these days to suit a true scholar. Too many of has forgotten what we learned and even more have never learned it to begin with. Bishop Harlon has a sad, regretful smile as he speaks. He stops smiling though when talking about Jamie,I doubt she vies for Sainthood. I'm not sure she is even a believer or member of the Church. She is undoubtedly a good and decent person. Her faith is open to question. He pauses looking around for a moment before turning back to Bardolf and speaking in a lower, more conspiratorially tone, I don't know if she's actually been 'captured.' It's quite possible it is a ruse of sorts on her part to get close to her enemies without having to wade through a curtain of soldiers and other aides and guardsmen. What a little I know of her, and it is little, I know she prefers to deal with her enemies directly rather than their agents or such. You should prepare yourself. The Basilica of St. Kargoth is Lord Cherot's domain and his aide, prelate Aguila. Take great care when moving among either of them, Aguila in particular. I will send them word you are coming as Jamie's confessor, it is only right and proper she has someone to grant her absolution before meeting the Saints face to face.
OOC-What does Bardolf want to do to prepare for his meeting? Does he want to bring anyone else along? If so, in what capacity? Bardolf knows that Lord Cherot is the Knight Commander of all Templars in Champagne, southern Lorraine and northern Burgundy. The only Church official with more power than him in this area is Arch-Bishop Damon of Reims(he is called the Mad with good reason)and Holy Father Lotan himself. Lord Cherot of Champagne is the half brother of Lady Gosset and a bastard of that House. He spent much of his youth learning the art of war fighting in Germania and north Africa. He soon was asked to join the Knight’s Templar and quickly rose in the ranks through his abilities as a soldier and diplomat. Bardolf doesn't know anymore than that about him. That and that he supposedly 'captured' Jamie Bogget.

Brother Arn makes a quick sketch of the ceiling to help commit it to memory. Brother Arn asks to pray with Brother Harlon prior to going to seek Jamies absolution. He tells the others to be ready to move out for a funeral, prepare a wagon as a hearse. Bishop Harlon I, Elias and Gullveig will be the primary ones to go into the Bascillica. The others will stay back away, outside. They will be our rescue if things get out of hand. I, Elias and will be dressed in confessional vestments, the others in funeral robes. Elias will carry a censer burning incense, Gullveig will carry an asperguillam and holy water bucket. If needed Elias will have a candle of invocation. We will go to Jamie to recieve her confession and I will try to determine her guilt or innocence. All, we don't want a fight. We simply want to go see Jamie and get her confession and ensure she is being properely treated. Those with the hearse be prepared to perform a burial ceremony if we are too late.
Bishop Harlon, is there more I should know about Cherot and Aguila?

Bardolf would believe, would definitely want to believe in Bishop Harlon's faith and decency. He is not certain though. Too much has happened in the last few years. Bardolf has seen too many people betrayed by their faith and then, there is Father Hayne to think about. Clearly a man of great faith, yet he is evil. Hayne serves the Church more faithfully than most, and yet he is a sadist. Quite a conundrum for certain. When he prays with Bishop Harlon, his hopes are borne out. Bishop Harlan willingly lets Bardolf see him for what and who he is, a devout, neutral good follower of St. Oghma, who is an adamant believer in the Celtic Rite. Bishop Harlon will cast a Word of Recall on Bardolf and he smiles when Bardolf tells him what he saw in the sculptures,That's part of the test. If you had not passed that, I would not have so fully and honestly revealed myself. It's not enough to live a good and decent life. One must have discernment and discretion as well. It's unfortunate, but true in these trying times we now live in. Prelate Aguila has long had the Holy Father's ear. Don't let his title of a simple prelate fool you. Aguila is one of the more, if not most influential members in Lotan's court. Many of the Cardinals resent and hate him for that. They do nothing out of fear. Aguila has few enemies, because like Gringamore, Aguila actively hunts and kills his foes. Lord Cherot I do not understand at all. In many ways he is as kind and generous a knight as you could hope to find. Unfortunately those qualities don't always win out with him. He is pragmatically cruel at times and others he is just honest enough not to trust. If you know what I mean. He and Prelate Aguila have known one another a long time, since Cherot was a boy. It was Cherot was a bastard of Lord Gosset's. It was Aguila who took him from that house, sponsered and paid for his training as a squire and then later as an acolyte of St. Kargoth and to Knighthood. Aguila is probably the closest thing to a true father Cherot has. The Saint's know his own father, and family by blood never cared for him or took pity. I often got the impression they felt such embarassment and resent towards him, they would have been more than happy if he died. I can't com with you. I'm not allowed in Kargoth's Basilica, being a man of peace I'm just too unseemly for them. All the preparations are made and soon, too soon the hearse carries them to St. Kargoth's Basilica. Bardolf can't help but notice the mixture of excitement and fear in the crowds of people they pass. They are going to the Basilica to see the Red Witch beheaded. Throngs of people line the streets and clamor for tickets to the execution. Bardolf knows the Kargoth's Basilica is loosely based on the designs of Aqualonian coliseums. The events, sports, and pageants hosted by the Flagellants are just as bloody, lustful and inhumane as the their Aqualonian counterparts. The hearse arrives and armed clerics wearing the dark vestments of the Flagellant Order open the doors and help Bardolf and Elias down. None of them, not a single one offers to help Gullveig. Bardolf steps out of the hearse and looks up at the great Basilica, having to crane his neck to do so. The Basilica rises up over the entire courtyard and buildings surrounding it. Casting them all in it's ominous shadow. Bardolf tilts his head to gaze at the shining central spire gilt with silver to catch the sun's rays and the two bracketing bell towers. Immense, finely wrought statues of gargoyles line the rim of the towers and top floors. Over the great double iron doors is a statue of a Flagellant Priest wielding an axe in one hand and a whip in the other. Bending down and groveling on either side of him are penitent worshippers. Bardolf would notice the priest in the Flagellant scene bears a shocking resemblance to Father Damian, the priest who taught Saint Loricato the art of Flagellation. Fourteen clerics in heavy plate, carrying short whips and throwing axes line up to escort them inside. They are all dressed in black and red and stand silent at attention, awaiting future orders. At the top of the stairs, Bardolf sees Sir Julian Ascot and newly appointed Vicar Idryrn Fane quietly discussing his arrival. Once they see him step down from the coach, both walk up to greet him,Welcome Brother Arn. We feel for you and your odious duty. If there is anything we can do to help you in this task, please, let us know. They are so courteous and well mannered, Bardolf isn't sure they even recgonize him until Idryryn asks,How's your sister?he hesitates for a moment, gauging Bardolf's reaction before continuing, Vingora's her name right? Is she still studying at the Bardic College in Brittany?

Arn puts all that Harlon tells him to memory. Arn is always troubled by the complexities and contradictions in the church, especially its hierarchy. Arn only says one thing about Cherot and Aguila. An old Proverb of the Slavs says, “A greedy father has thieves for children”
Arn stands and walks toward the door. I thank you for all your help Bishop Harlon. I hope to find Jamie well and to serve my duty, now I take your leave.
When Arn starts to see the crowd and their bloodlust Arn will cast a couple of cantrips. First ghost sound eminating from a local fountain or well. The sounds will be angelic and comforting. Then Arn will send a couple of message spells to commoners or tradesmen in the crowd. The message will be short, telling of Jamies campassion to lowly creatures or people. It will not speak of Jamies innocence, but show her compassion. Arn is trying to evoke a feeling of empathy and mercy for Jamie. Further on Arn will use mage hand cantrip to levitate a cross around a commoners neck, then cast the same angelic ghost sounds followed by the message spells as before. Arn's intent is to spread a feeling of compassion in the mob for Jamie.
Upon arriving Arn will step down greeting Ascot, his old nemisis and Fane. Arn puts the feelings aside, hoping that they have found their own salvation. Arn will let them prove otherwise before he acts. Solemn greetings brothers. I thank you for your help. I will need several things to complete the autos de fe Ceremony. I apologize for not getting here sooner, there is much to do. Immediatley I will need a private room to have a mass with the guilty. Once I have that the guilty should be brought to me, securely in chains. Though I have the duty of absolving crimminals, I have teh experience to know not all of them are ready to renounce their wicked ways. Arn shows some concern and a forced smile. My duty is the church and there are risks for us all brothers.
The accused and I will spend the night in prayer and purification, by tommorow I will need a great deal ready.
The courtyard will need to be set up for the crowd ready to watch this, there will need to be seating, especially for lords, ladies and other dignitaries. There should be ushers and food made ready. Arn looks around at the bare courtyard and the mob outside. He shakes his head in a look of dissapointment, then shrugs his shoulders and gives a hopeful glance. I hope the preparations can be made quickly, with one with the wicked reputation of Jamie, I wouldn't be surprised if the Holy Father himself comes to watch.............
We best get at it, we will several tables and chairs for dignitaries complete with wine, tableclothes. An artist should be on hand to paint this important event.............someone good if you can find them on short notice. I've been told that in Italy the waiting crowds are entertained with puppeters or even actors playing out the crimes of the crimminals prior to the execution. That would be excellent, you know the peseantry, some times you really have to spell it out for them.
One last thing, I need a well crafted green cross to lead the crimminal to the execution, it is required of the ceremony.
Arn clasp his hands in eagerness........ Now, I won't keep you busy men anymore, where do I find the room to hold the prayer vigil and mass? nullauto de fe

Vicar Fayne's mouth droops some at Bardolf's response. He was expecting to bait him more, break his composure some. Sir Ascot is perturbed or surprised in the least. If he is, he doesn't show it. No need for apologies Brother Arn. The times are troubled enough without baiting ourselves for untimely arrivals. You speak honestly Brother Arn, giving up evil is hard to do for those who have labored long in it's service. I personally think this witch is more misguided than true evil. She has broken many Church Laws, but has done some good. Come with me,says Sir Ascot, holding one hand open and pointing up the stairs with his other. They stop walking up, Sir Julian and Bardolf side by side. Vicar Fayne doesn't come. He is still standing on the street. An apple red coach with gold trim, pulled by six dark black horses is coming down the street. Vicar Fayne is watching with much interest. Five mounted knights in full plate ride escort. Bardolf recgonizes one of the knights, a sharp chill moving through as he does. It is Sir Erbick, an evil knight, a lycan, and one of Duchess Celicia's closest and most reliable men. The chill doesn't leave him, only increases as the coach stops across the street and the Duchess herself steps out. She is taller than most men, huskier too. She is at least 6-3. Her long dark hair winds around her neck like a scarf and down her back all the way to her knees. She is dressed warmly in a dark sable cloak with silver trim. She never once looks their way, never even pays any attention to them. Even so, Bardolf can feel his own defensive spells wilting in the wave of malice and power naturally emanating from her. So caught up in watching her, almost transfixed, Bardolf doesn't realize Julian's talking to him,....the real evil. No true Duchess is she, not even with the Church, yet she is one of Bishop Damon's favorites. Not hard to imagine why aye Brother Arn? Sir Julian takes Bardolf's arm and leads him into the Basilica's side foyer reserved only for clergy. The hall is quiet and sleepy feeling, full of dry warmth. Bardolf can hear Kargothian monks at prayer and the scribbling sounds of friars working hard at their desks in the rooms lining the hall. Sir Julian leads him down quiet hall and into a small office smelling of pipe smoke and lined with religious tomes and a tapestry depicting St. Kargoth slaying a horned demon. Sir Philip Mesney of Orlean and another man Bardolf doesn't recgonize,a bishop by his clothes and bearing, are standing patiently. Bishop Calchus, Sir Mesney, this is Brother Arn. He is has come to deliver absolution and last rites for the witch Jamie Boggett. Bishop Calchus is a lean and long limbed, making him look taller than he actually is. He has long face ending in a pointed chin that matches the squinty quality of his eyes and his delicate nose and cheeks. His dark brown hair looks feather soft, brushed to a shine more befitting a woman than a priest. His voice is sad sounding, matching the morose look of his face,Welcome Brother Arn. We've arranged to have the confession and final mass in the small chapel dedicated to St. Ausry. It is quiet and private. Take your time, but your care as well. I'll have several blessed Knights and two Inquisitors waiting the hall outside. It's a precaution I hope is not necessary. You should know this Witch is capable of summoning monsters. She brought toad-like demons called Slaads with her when she destroyed the village of Alboine, and she had a Shadow Demon with her in Nijmegin when she killed Master Arlensius. It's not certain yet because we have no proof, but we also believe she is in league with Gringamore the Mourner. Take care with her Brother Arn, she is deserving of our mercy and compassion, but she must be watched. She is charming and easily beguiles men with her childlike smile and manners. Sir Mesney and Sir Ascot will assist you. If you need anything else from me, let me know.
OOC-Bardolf SA Will DC 23, He knows that Duchess Celicia is at least 500 years old. She is the Lycan Queen of the Blood Mark clan of werewolves and a sorceress. She is feared by most with good reason.

Arn was hoping by demanding the full autos de fe ceremony it would distract Julian Ascot his old nemisis and Vicar Fayne; keep them busy running around making arrangements, looking for table clothes and green crosses. It was all part of proper church ceremony. And give him a chance to get one on one with Jamie, these thoughts were in his head when the red coach pulled up. Then his breath was stolen and the thoughts went out of his head. Arn didn't know if he had ever been in the presence of such evil. Undead hadn't made him so mind blank and awe struck. A tingling starting in Arns calves going up his body to his nose weakened his step. Before he knew it he was up the stairs with Julian. Julian seemed less evil now, perhaps only misguided compared to what he had just felt.
Arn responds to Julian. What do you mean by true evil? All can be seek salvation should they change their ways. What has she done that she could not find absolution and peace?
Arn takes in the hall scanning about. St Kargoths sports a fine hall, I should like to take some time to study and pray here once my duties are completed. Arn looks around for who is smoking the pipe. Checking on what the clergy are studying and writing. (rolls below)
Arn address Calchus formerely as is proper. Your Excellency, I have heard of at least some of the witches wickedness for the last 5 years. I have heard that she turns children into pigs, but summoning so many monsters I did not know about. And the murder of Master Arlensius. I will say prayers for him and his family that they might find peace in this world and the next.
I saw Duchess Celicia arrive. Apparantly this event has brought many that want to witness this. What is the Duchess interest in the witch? Has she come as a representitive of Bishop Damon?
I will take great care with this one. There is always risk, but my soul is prepared for any eventuality.

Julian looks at Bardolf, somewhat surprised at the question. We all have our temptations and petty wrongs. The small evils common to any life. The Duchess though, actively courts malice and cruel acts. Sometimes she flaunts her liscentiousness without a hint of shame. She does not seek redemption or salvation of any kind. Worse, she seeks to convert others not to seek it either. Do you understand now what I mean by true evil? --------- Standing in the small office, Bardolf can't find the person smoking. He can tell the pipe belongs to neither Bishop Calchus or Sir Mesney. He starts to realize this is not even their office. It's simple, yet stately atmosphere coupled with the books and tomes lining the wall lead him to believe it is a Prelate's office. Before they can answer his questions about the Duchess, a handsome man in a prelate's vestments walks in and looks Bardolf over as he picks up the pipe and takes a long draw. He is 5-9, 170lbs, with dark hair and beautiful, almost mesmerizing dark gray eyes. Welcome to St. Kargoth's Basilica Brother Arn. I am prelate Aguila. It is my understanding the Holy Father chose you to act as Jamie Boggett's confessor. Well then, let us be about it. You should understand that Jamie is not with the other unfortunate souls. We have seen fit to place her under special watch due to the circumstances of her estrangement from the Church. I'm certain after having studied and learned from Father Hayne you won't find anything too extreme. Jamie is this way. Aguila leads him out the same door Aguila came in and down a long, silent corridor. Sir Mesney and Bishop Calchus stayed behind and Bardolf finds himself following Aguila down the hall and then down a curling stone stair into darkness.

Arn replies to Julian about the Duchess Sounds like True Evil to me. Why doesn't anyone do anything about it. Do you think she is possessed? Perhaps and Exorcism is in order
------------------------------------------------------
Bardolf says to Prelate Aguila. I've always liked the smell of a pipe. I have never smoked one, but I like the smell. There is something, well, something a little noble about the smell of a pipe. I don't know what it is?
Arn truly felt that way about pipe smoke, and it helped him lose some of his tension about the place he was in, and all he had taken in recently.
About the Boggett manner, yes lets be to it. I have studied under Father Hayne, and I have learned much. Very Much. Arn trails off the last in a bit of a maliscous tone.

Sir Julian gives a short, mocking snort of a laugh at Arn's questions and comments about the Duchess,She is not attacked or condemned because she is one of Bishop Damon's favorites. There are rumors they are lovers. That's just one of the reasons he is called "Damon the Mad." Did you know he chopped off his own hand in hopes of attaching some legendary relic to it? Yea, he's gone, his mind, his conscience, gone. Jamie is carrying this relic and the Raven's Tear. Those and other things she carries are to be auctioned off after her execution. The Auction is another reason so many ranking nobles and clergy are coming to this event. That and the fact Jamie has made enemies of most of them. ------------------- Prelate Aguila turns and smiles at Arn, waving the smoking pipe around as he talks,Smoking is my guilty pleasure. I know we take vows and strive to live without such worldly pleasures, but so far I just haven't been able to overcome this one. Here, take a puff if you wish. Not that I mean to tempt you or anything. Aguila's manner has become more open, less stiff and formal now they are out of sight of the others. In an almost fatherly way, Aguila puts his arm around Arn's shoulder,Are you prepared to give Jamie the shifter's test?(Hayne did this to Bardolf when he jammed the hot poker under Bardolf's toenail.)I ask this only because there are so many stories circulating about the "Red Witch of the Ardennes," I want to make sure she is the correct witch, the one who has actually caused all the trouble and commited the atrocius acts of sacrificing Templars and Flagellants by hanging them and throwing a spear through their hearts. Arn can sense this a test. Prelate Aguila is trying to figure something out about Arn. Looking for clues and answers in having Arn do this test, when the one truly being tested was Arn himself. He looks behind to see Elias and Gullvieg quietly serving and playing their roles, waiting and ready to defend him if need be. Arn can tell neither of them likes Prelate Aguila. Elias in particular has a hard time hiding his contempt. Arn is shocked to see another man behind them. Arn doesn't know where he came from or when, but there he is, lean and powerful, supple and silent like some great hunting cat. For the slight moment when Arn first looked at him, he cast a strange inhuman shadow. For just that moment, he looked like he had a tiger's snout and ears and fringes of hair. It passes quickly and Arn and Aguila turns, smiling and putting his arm around Arn's shoulder again,This is Sir Chanez, my bodyguard. I never go anywhere without him. The hair on Arn is standing up all over. He has to concentrate not to tremble. Although Aguila looks like a man, looks normal, when he put his hand on Arn's shoulder the first time the feel of it struck Arn as odd. Now this second time, he knows why. Aguila's hand feels different, the thumb is in the wrong place, it's on the opposite side of a normal human hand! Arn realizes this as they reach the bottom of the stair and come to a small guardsroom. He can see nine Kargothian Knights and three flagellant priests in the room. All of them look anxious and concerned, but say nothing. Four of the Knights have loaded crossbows in their hands. Aguila looks at Arn,There is some trouble in the cells. Do you mind waiting here while I conduct an inquiry to determine the nature of this concern?

Brother Arn lets Julians snickering pass, he had a mission to concentrate on and didn't want to get bogged down with Julian. At being offered the pipe Arn replies. I regret that I must respectfully pass. I have taken Sacred Vows of Abstinence. Along with Vows of Poverty.
Then when Aguila asks about the shapeshifter test with Jamie. Arn replies calmly. I have undergone the test myself with Father Hayne. It is but one burden the faithful of the church must perform. I will do all that is required of my Sacred Duty to the Church your Excellency.
The realization of what Aguilla and his body guard were was unsettling. Arn felt dirty just being around these two. But now was not the time for haste. Arn couldn't make a move of any kind until Jamie was found.
Trouble in the cells? Hmmmmm could it be?
Arn continued to play his part. He nodded, not wanting to distract anyone, he folded his arms in his robes and kneeled to pray as any faithful might do when there is trouble.
OOC I need to get you an updated character sheet.
Standard pre action spells Fox's Cunning from Sorcerer Owls Wisdom from Cleric I have Mind Shielding from Vow of Poverty
I would usually cast a magic circle against evil, but not in this case as I kinda knew I was walking into the valley of the devil and I didn't want to be a beacon in the night, until I had to be.

Arn and Elias kneel in prayer while Aguila and Chanez take a tall, odd looking flagellant and four of the Knights. They open the cell door and move into the darkned hall. Arn can hear yelling and banging, like a heavy mace on an iron door and somewhere beyond it all, someone is playing music and a crowd is laughing. When Arn starts praying, the inhuman malevolence of Aguila and Chanez hits home. There is nothing redeemable or remotely human about either of them. His prayers also alert him to the suffering and horrific practices that have happened in the cells beyond. He can feel it in the groaning stones and bloodied ground. Regular ritual sacrifices have taken place here. This ground once sacred to St. Kargoth is now corrupt. Prelate Aguila, the thing standing mute before him played a part in the defilement. He is startled when the Prelate calls his name,Brother Arn. Brother Arn, you are needed. Arn steps up with Elias behind him. Looking down the corridor they can see fire limned in the cracks of door at the far end. About half-way down they see a burnt man laying on his back, his fleshless hands waving in the air. Another handsome man with dark blond hair, kneels over him, trying to stop the blood spurting from his thigh. Arn can tell even at this distance, it's femoral bleeding. Aguila was only about ten feet down the corridor when he stopped, uncertain and concerned. The tall Flagellant stops as well, nervously looking around. A raw, briny smell suddenly reaches Arn. The tall flagellant looks at him and Arn feels him trying to read his mind, trying to pry into his thoughts. His eyebrows scrunch up in consternation at the strength of Arn's will and faith keeping him out. Prelate Aguila looks up and around, before looking back at Arn,Go! go with Chanez and help that poor priest. That door leads to Jamie's cell. You guards, go with them and find out what's burning on the other side of that far door. Aguila's voice is commanding and full of confidence. All of the knights and guardsmen follow after Chanez, not even considering disobeying him. Arn hears and sees something different though. He hears just a timbre of fear in the urgency of Aguila's voice. He can see it also in the Flagellant's face. That's when he knows the man is no true Kargothian flagellant. He is possibly a follower of Set in disguise. He might even have scales like Slonim. More importantly, Arn knows they are afraid of Jamie.

Brother Arn rapidly thought through his options. He wasn't sure what was happening in the cell. But if they were afraid of Jamie perhaps things would be OK for the time being. Arn did know a couple of things, Both Aquila and Chanez were evil and Chanez was not from this world. If there was one thing that disturbed Arn more than Undead it might be Demons and Devils.
Arn jumped on the opprotunity, Chanez was ahead of him on the stairs not expecting anything from behind, it was time for Chanez to return to the depths of Hell from whence he Came. Arn cast Dismissal on Chanez. )Will Save of 26-creatures HD)
Dismissal Abjuration Level: Clr 4, Sor/Wiz 5 Components: V, S, DF Casting Time: 1 standard action Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels) Target: One extraplanar creature Duration: Instantaneous Saving Throw: Will negates; see text Spell Resistance: Yes
This spell forces an extraplanar creature back to its proper plane if it fails a special Will save (DC = spell’s save DC - creature’s HD + your caster level). If the spell is successful, the creature is instantly whisked away, but there is a 20% chance of actually sending the subject to a plane other than its own.
Arn knew this would likely prompt an attack from his unprotected rear, but if this demon got inside the cell with Jamie it would likely be worse. Plus Elias was behind him still.

Arn steps into the hall, Sir Chanez and one of the other knights in front of him. He is surprised when fifteen more guardsmen, all in black, banded mail join them from a hidden side door. Sir Chanez sends them down the hall first, ordering them to the far door to find out what's burning and why. Arn sees two flagellant priests among them, eager and hungry for combat. Somewhere in the distance, down the hall perhaps, he can hear singing and laughing and the murmur of hundreds of voices talking and laughing. He has no idea where it's coming from but it sounds like people at a Carnival or an execution. Knowing he doesn't have much longer, he acts. Sir Chanez turns, his face distorting, growing a snout and furred ears. Arn hears Chanez growling at him, at first in anger and hunger, then in dismay as Arn's dismissal washes over him, sending him back to whatever hell spawned him. Arn doesn't have time to celebrate. He hears a crack like a whip echo in his mind, feels himself losing his balance and about to fall over. Elias is screaming and grabbing his ears while Gullvieg moves forward, her axe coming off her shoulder and driving through the sternum of one of the False Flagellant priests. The tall, ungainly Flagellant and Aguila are both backing up in fear and rapidly casting.
