OOC-Illian has spent the last few months traveling and searching for clues about her staff, her dance and her purpose for knowing and using them. During that time she has fought strange foes, met good friends and enemies alike and, fallen in love. While seeking knowledge of her staff, The druid Celyddon led her to an isle in the midst of a Lake and there she met the shade of a long dead firbolg chieftain, who in rather macabre fashion, gave her his head to wake a shade of long dead Firbolg druid, buried in Brittany. Illian traveled to Brittany riding on the Mist dragon Hithuial's slim back to celebrate Yule and find the shade and the start of a quest.

IC-A small crackly pop from the fire brings Illian out of her reverie. She wakes rested and hungry. No wonder that. The smells of hot bread, ham, bacon, honey and jam waft from the kitchen through the near empty common room, stirring her stomach. Goshawk stops wittling and looks up, smiling, Did you have restful dreams? I slept so hard I had none. Such a deep sleep surprised me, for I had not thought I was so tired. Are you hungry? We can order breakfast, or would rather take a walk and discuss, well what is we are going to discuss. Would you mind if one of the older druids accompanied us? They might have some insight, more than I for certain. I have to confess I am not that old or lorewise as some others. I do promise to help you out as best I can.

Breakfast is welcomed, as is a walk with those in knowledge. Do we wait to break bread with the others first or are we meeting them elsewhere afterwards?

Illian with load a biscuit with jam and wait for his reply.

"We'll meet him in a grove near to here" replies Goshawk. "There is no rush, though."

They eat breakfast in silence, and when they have finished the druid leads Illian away from the village towards a small wood. As they approach it, Goshawk turns to Illian.

"Before we enter the grove, I should tell you something. You came here with the druid Celyddon, or so it is said. I have heard of him, but I have never met him. So, well, I should make no judgements, but you should know that there is no love lost between the Druids of Bretagne and Albion. Some of the elder druids here have nothing good to say of our Albion brethren, and I have heard that the Council in Ynys Mon thinks that we are inferior, that we have lost the knowledge."

He shrugs.

"Perhaps they are right. There is hardly any communciation between Albion and the rest of the Western World these days. Illian, may I ask you a question? This druid, Celyddon - what is he like? They say he is a maverick, that the Druid Council of Albion cast him out. Some even say he is no true Druid at all, just a fraud with a few tricks. What did you think of him?"

Goshawk's striking blue eyes burn with curiosity as he asks Illian of Celyddon.

Illian had expected there to be some difference of opinion in the druids of the mainland versus Albion, as most she had met had not even considered Percy to be a druid even though she had been quite sure he had been. So she merely shrugs it off...until the topic turns to Celyddon.

I don't know. I haven't been near him for but a day or so as yet, though I seemed to have passed the test he set for me...and it seems Elrohir was in on that concept, and I know Elrohir to be nobody's fool. I also have information from my quest with Prince Edward, which is scarce and about testing those that seek knowledge. Beyond this knowledge, I have yet to formulate any real opinions of the man, I simply haven't had the time.

Goshawk nods, although he looks slightly disappointed.

"Well, maybe we will find out. He's here, apparently, although I've not seen him. I thought he might be at the Yule celebrations, but he didn't show. I'd like to meet him."

They continue on to the grove. Waiting for them are a man and a woman, both druids. The man is lean and tall, with long dark hair and blue-gray eyes. He is dressed in robes with a number of beads sewn in, and Illian can see twigs braided into his hair. The woman is also tall, almost six feet, with dark hair, dark eyes, and smooth weathered skin. She is wearing only a simple weave of green cloth. Illian can see that she has several white scars and blue tattoos on her arms and thighs, but these do not detract from her beauty.

The man nods to Illian's companion.

"Thank you for bringing Illian to us, Goshawk. Feel free to remain or depart, as you please". Turning to Illian, he continues: "My name is Sulamon. This is Ethnae. You are welcome here, although neither of us is from these parts. You should know that the druids of Bretagne are not aware of our presence here today. There is no sinister motive for this, we just did not have time to arrange a meeting with them. They tend to keep themselves to themselves."

Ethnae laughs, a silvery sound that reminds Illian more of an elf than a human.

"I do not recall the last time I saw a Breton druid, at least more than in passing. May we offer you a drink?". She holds up a small horn and a waterskin.

Sulamon waits until Illian takes the proffered horn (or not) and then continues.

"We know of your quest - something of it, anyway - and we would like to help if we can. It is all linked, your wyrd and ours. A thread unravelled here will cause a ripple in the weave, far away, and the reverse too. So your work in Albion is as important as ours here. Perhaps even more so."

Illian turns to Goshawk and asks him to stay. If for no other reason that to aid me in communicating with the others, I would ask it.

Illian waits until he agrees, then takes the horn and drinks.

One would hope that my work is as important, else why meet and discuss that which would not matter.

Goshawk had made no move to leave anyway, but he nods and gives Illian a quick smile when she asks that he stays.

"We want to help, but you must tell us what we can do. Perhaps there is information we can provide? Or would you like one of us to accompany you on your quest?" asks Sulamon.

I'm not entirely sure myself. For a long time it was just sitting in the back of my mind, waiting for me to take action, and not until prospect of chasing legend woke me to it once more. Now I'm not sure where the legend will lead me, but I believe now, more than ever, that it is relevant and necessary to find.

For now, I have to go and acquire Streng's head. And then take it to Eire.

"Take Streng's head to Eire?" asks Sulamon, looking taken aback. "Do you speak of the champion of the Fir Bolg, who led his people against the Tuatha Dé Danann? Streng has visited you?"

He exchanges a long look with Ethnae. Both druids look astounded, much as Celyddon did back on the island of Caer Aelin.

"Why must you acquire his head?" asks Ethnae. "Can you share what he told you with us?"

I did, at Caer Aelin. He told me a blight is working its way across Albion and is a great threat to all. He implied that it may be as great a threat, if not greater, than what you all face here on the mainland. I am beginning to understand the reluctance of Olorin having me speak of my journey and my quest with the Reformation Council; there are so many we cannot trust.

I am supposed to take Streng's head to Eire, to have council with the Fir Bolg. I fear I have already seen the blight. The trees tried to warn me, but I did not listen. And they are afraid of it, very much afraid of it. And I did promise the trees that I would help.

I have answered many of your questions...I have one. You know of my staff? What can you tell me about it?

"So it is true, then. We had heard rumours of the blight in Albion. It is affecting the forests here, too, in some areas." Sulamon shakes his head sadly. "We have heard that large parts of the Forest of Albion have fallen to it, and our fear is that it will continue to spread further."

"Of your staff, we have heard a little" says Ethnae. "We know something of your quest, but little of detail."

She pauses, and then adds,

"There is a song that the smallfolk sing occasionally. When I heard of you and your quest, I was reminded of it. It is an old song, and few of the halflings know it, but it has been passed down through the years."

She starts to sing.

In the forests and the glades
The Elvish maid does dance
Around her light is born again
Night stays its dark advance.

Shepherds wake and stretch their limbs
Long slumber to eschew
Yavanna's children watch the dance
The land awakes anew.

In ancient henge and fallen tor
The Elvish maid does dance
At Amon Sûl the song is sung
Embraced, the final chance.

Mallorn-tree and mighty oak
Lissuin and niphedril
All lend strength to Nimloth's heir
Upon the ancient hill.

When darkness sweeps the land again
And hope is dead and gone
The land will rise, once more to fight
With sword, and dance, and song.

Sulamon waits until the last notes of the song have faded away, and then says,

"It is called The Song of Gisla, although none of the smallfolk remember why it has this name. It may have no relevance, but Ethnae and I have discussed it and we think that perhaps it does. Everything is connected. It may be of use to you."

Ethnae smiles at Illian.

"If council with the Fir Bolg is your intention, then let us help you. Do you know where to find Streng's head?"

I have heard my staff referred to as the Rod of Gisla, but I know it has another name, Milea Vas. I don't know if that tells you anything.

Streng told me his head is buried here, in Brittany. He said Arthur buried his head beneath the Sleeping Stone, that there was a way to awaken the Sleeping Stone, and that it would waken the Ents... he called them the Shepherd's of the Trees. Once again, the fate of the world seems to be in my hands, only more so this time around...

As long as I am here, any knowledge I can get as to the location of Excalibur would be great. I have a theory, and I'm pretty sure it's accurate, given that Olorin didn't want me to say anything about it in Council chambers...

Neither of the druids has come across the name Milea Vas, but at the mention of awakening the Ents they both exchange a glance.

"The Ents are supposed to be gone from the land for ever. But some of us have questioned whether this was really so. There are legends - such as the Song of Gisla - that speak of their return. If they are still here and were awakened, they could be a great ally to us" says Sulamon.

Ethnae purses her lips.

"The Sleeping Stone? I have heard the hobbits mention this name. I have not visited it, but I believe that it may be a tomb of one of the Old People, the ones who were here before the halflings. It is on the western coast, near a village called Camaret."

"As to Excalibur, it is said that when Arthur lay dying after his final battle, he entrusted one of his knights to return it to the the Lady of the Lake, the sorceress Nimue, by throwing it into a nearby lake. Twice the knight failed to do so, but finally he summoned the courage to complete the task the King had charged him with. The Lady of the Lake accepted the sword's return and it has not been seen since. I do not know where it might be now. Some say it died with Arthur, and simply rusted away at the bottom of the lake. That does not seem a fitting end for such a blade, but it may be true."

Oh, I know the legend. What took me to Albion was chasing that very legend. But, the knowledge that was brought to me by Prince Edward also included Elvish texts from the days of old, even an excerpt of text about Arwen. My theory, one that Olorin was quick to quiet me about and not dispute, is that Excalibur is Anduril, reforged from Narsil. If this is true, we should be more vigilant in finding it, but as I still travel with Prince Edward, who seeks it, I would say that that particular journey is not outside my current parameters.

I have no doubt that it was thrown into the lake. I do believe it may be waiting for someone worthy to quest for it.

"It may be so" agrees Sulamon. "I have never found any links between Andúril and Excalibur to suggest that they are one and the same, but then again I have never investigated the possibility either. It is an interesting theory."

Goshawk clears his throat to attract their attention.

"Someone is coming from the village" he tells them.

A few minutes later, a young halfling arrives, out of breath and clutching a scrap of parchment and a quill in his hand.

"Mistress Illian? I have a message for you, from Celyddon. He wants to know what's taking so long, and, what did he say..." - he looks down at some notes he has hastily scrawled - "...tell her to get a move on, he wants to get out of Brittany and back to civilisation before he runs into any of their druids and has to make polite conversation with them."

The halfling glances at Sulamon and Ethnae and and blushes apologetically.

"Charming, as always" says Ethnae with a smile. "And to think he's one of Albion's more approachable druids. No wonder we hardly ever speak to them."

Sulamon just shakes his head.

"So. Will you travel to Camaret?" he asks Illian. "Ethnae and I have pressing business elsewhere, so we will not be able to accompany you, but I can arrange for travelling companions - if it is your intention to go there, that is?"

Yes, Celyddon is...peculiar. He had a rather odd way of introducing himself to me. But that is beside the point.

Now that I know where I am going, I won't wander aimlessly seeking it. I thank you for that. I will be going, but I do have my own companions to go with and I have the promise of financial backing for the journey. Besides, I do believe Celyddon is traveling with me, and if he is as rude with you as he is now, I doubt very much anyone you send with me would be welcome.

I thank you very much for sharing your wisdom and your knowledge with me.

"You are welcome" replies Ethnae. The three druids bid Illian farewell, although Goshawk accompanies Illian and the halfling messenger as far as the edge of the village before taking his leave.

"If you ever have need of us, just leave word with the halflings" Goshawk tells her. "It is a shame I did not get to meet Celyddon. Another time, perhaps. I have no doubt that you and I will meet again."

The young halfling who brought Celyddon's message tells Illian that the old druid is waiting for her in the tavern.

Illian sighs, watches the druids leave until she feels like the halfling would pull expectantly at her shirt, though she knows he wont but feels like he might. Then she reluctantly turns and heads back towards the tavern.

If not even the druids of the world can work together, what hope is there that we will accomplish anything?

The halfling walks alongside Illian as she heads to the tavern.

"I didn't introduce myself, I'm sorry. It's these druids, they make me nervous, and I forget my manners. Thomatholy Butterbeer, at your service, but my friends just call me Tom. I hope you enjoyed the Yule festival? Did you try the village honey mead? It's famous you know, all over Brittany. And beyond too. I heard the Queen of Lorraine has it served to visitors to her court."

He continues to chatter all the way to the tavern.

Celyddon is waiting in the tavern, a tankard of what looks like curdled milk in his hand.

"There you are" he says. "Would've come to find you but I heard Sulamon of Artois was here, so I've been hiding in here in case I ran into him. Never forgiven me for...well, doesn't matter. No sense of humour, that one. Did you find what you were looking for? Ready to go? Hithuial is waiting for us. He's not here of course, don't want to get the halflings all over excited."

"Who's Hithuial?" Tom wants to know.

"Never you mind" says Celyddon, offering the hobbit some pipeweed. "So. Where to?"

Illian lets the halfling chatter all the way to the inn without interjection. Her mind is still on the discord between Druids, and when she sees Celyddon and hears his words, she is even more frustrated by them.

Sulamon and his friend were very helpful in giving me more information I need, and if I am to be successful at whatever it is I am doing, I will do well to take assistance when I can get it. If you think the world would be a better place if people got along and held less grudges, you're not making a good role model by keeping one of your own.

As for destination, we can either go back to Caer Aelin and wait til our reinforcements arrive, of which I have been promised, or Hithuial can take us to Camaret. I have been told what we seek, for now, is there.
