This will be the starting off point for the one Bards. I have a good story tie in if you both want to be Bards. You just need to diversify the feats and skills you take.

Chad and Catra are hanging out near the Cauldron Town Center. This is near where the central Town Guard baracks are situated. It's a slow day, dispite all of the reported disappearances lately, there hasn't been any new reported abductions of citizens reported since the 4 children from the orphanage were taken. The guard have been pretty mum about any details as it's an "Ongoing investigation" so you're waiting outside to see if anything new is breaking. You know each other by sight and by reputation, but you don't fly in the same social circles so you don't really know each other. Usually you would avoid each other, but you are also competitive and you think you are on the same story. The first to deliver to their respective papers, will probably reap the greater reward.
It is late afternoon and you're both ready to give up the wait, when you see what looks like a man with extra long legs running toward the barracks and up the stairs to go inside. He seems a little flustered. A strange sight indeed. Possibly the end of your drudgery waiting for that lead!
Both roll a knowledge/Int check< and perception check.
Post your description, what you were doing when you saw the stranger
If you have questions about the abductions, List them out and then roll some more Knowledge/Int checks. I'll then let your character know what they know. Some of it is already common knowledge, so please read chapter 0. You'll either get that info when you talk to the party members as well, as well as other sources in town, or through your contacts.

How can I be expected to handle work on a day like this? Chad Hymnsworth mused, drinking in the beauty above him with his denim-colored eyes. An eagle, far above, cut a swath across a lone cloud; a bright white puffball that stood in stark contrast with the brilliant azure sky. The sun shone bright but calm, and its warmth felt good on his fair skin. A gentle breeze tussled his blonde hair with the familiarity of an old lover, and he smiled in a way that would make make men calm and women excited.
If work must be this slow, at least I'm out of doors.
He was dressed in a pair of thin black trousers and an indigo, open collar shirt that hung loosely on his thin frame. Highly polished black boots and black leather suspenders completed the carefully constructed ensemble. It took time and energy to look good, but it was always worth it.
Sighing contentedly, his eyes dropped to the halfling across the road. She was another reporter, he knew; she worked for that smut mag The Real Scoop. A real scoop of something. He didn't like the magazine, but he had to admit she was a very classy reporter. They'd bumped into each other from time to time while on the hunt, and he wasn't too proud to admit she'd beaten him to a couple of stories. He was frustrated by how. She seemed to have a knack for finding sources he couldn't begin to consider; he had no doubt he was the better talker, but it's hard to schmooze when you don't know who to talk to.
He looked away from her. Honestly, this was the sort of job she would probably beat him to. He hated it, and he would never admit it to another soul, but having called in just about every witness, possible witness, and barely involved witness to no avail, Chad was at the mercy of the guard. And, considering his current fugitive status (That makes me sound like some dastardly rogue with a heart of gold, he chuckled to himself) that was not a place Chad liked to be. He had a sweet deal here in Cauldera, and he wasn't looking to mess it up.
Looking down the street at the town that had become his home, he reflected not for the first time how glad he was to be here. It was a good place; a little quiet for his tastes, and certainly not nearly as artistic as he was used to, but the people were honest and had some fantastic stories to tell. His weekly piece on interesting family histories was a huge hit with the Gazeteer, and had earned him an accolade or two. Why, just last month his story had
His gaze drifted back. The halfling was gone. Where did that little...oh, crap. She was fast approaching a man on the steps of the guard barracks.
Not today little lady! he thought to himself, jogging up to the steps.
"Excuse me, sir! Chad Hymnsworth, Cauldron Gazeteer. The people want to know what the city guard is doing about the missing children. Are there any new details, and if not, what is the guard doing to make sure this doesn't happen again? The people are scared!" Secure Rolls: Knowledge/Int 1d20(7)+2 = 9 Perception 1d20(2)+5 = 7

off the bat, the dice roller hates you already! obviously with that perception roll and your distraction... You don't notice the disproportionate man is not wearing a guard uniform.
" WHa..??, what are you talking about? Move aside I'm in a hurry. Has this town has gone stir crazy with paranoia with all these abuction thing? Why there's vigilantes tearing up my shop as we speak!... now excuse me I need to get some real help.."
He pushes past you as you try to block him and goes inside.

You're telling me...
"Heh heh, o-of course I knew that sir! I merely wondered if you...might..."
The door slams shut in Chad's face as he squints his eyes tight and hopes the halfling didn't QUITE hear ALL of that.
Bollocks.

Catra lounges in the sunlight, basking in the warmth like a cat. Well, at least it's nice for once. Last time, I nearly froze to death. She shifts impatiently. Still, this is pointless. I should go... She starts to move, then pauses as the nicely dressed half-elf caught her eye. But if he catches something before I do... Bugger. Ten more minutes.
Catra makes an indignant noise as Chad bypasses her to get to the mysterious long-legged individual first. Her scowl transforms into a smirk when he comes up short. Her brown eyes gleam with suppressed laughter. "Missed something, did you? Well, you got there first, and that's what matters."
Next to the dashing figure, she seems almost a shadow. Her skin is pale, save for the freckles that spatter her cheeks, and her auburn hair was clearly cut short for practicality rather than style. Short and slim, even for a halfling, her clothes are worn, their colors muted with age. Only her grey cloak seems to be of quality.
Vigilantes, huh... I wonder what they know? She tries to place the hasty figure, to remember where his shop is. Secure Rolls: Knowledge/Int 1d20(14)+2 = 16 Perception 1d20(13)+5 = 18 Streetwise 1d20(16)+8 = 24

Catra, you recognize the Gnome as Keygan Ghelve. He's the local (and only) Locksmith in town. He is known to wear stilts while in his shop as he doesn't like to be looked down upon while negotiating the price of his wares and skills.
It's a pet peeve he has...something that a person of your stature, often had to deal with yourself.
Normally, he doesn't wear them outside of the shop, but he was either in a rush to leave..or truely flustered by the events that he just plain forgot to take them off. Either way, it is evidence that there's truth in his emergency.
You know exactly where the shop is (On Lava Avenue)

Keygan is 110 years old with Salt and pepper hair and a neatly trimmed mustache and goatee. His bushy eyebrows, creased face, and graven frown make him look fumpy and dour, He posesses a sly wit and a disarming manner (when not flustered)
He wears wooden and iron stilts. He wears extra long pants to hid them. The stilts make him almost 6ft tall. You notice he has no problem walking in the stilts.
He enters the police barracks and the door closes behind him. You hear mufffled, lively discussion behind it.

Chad turns and smiles at the young woman.
"If I mis-stepped, it was due in equal parts to the beauty of the company," his hands indicate Catra with a flourish, "and the desire to get a good story," he says, waving to the building to his back.
Chad takes a step backwards and tries in vain to listen to what is being said through the door. Secure Rolls: Perception 1d20(2)+5 = 7

Streetwise check mr Chad The thick doors that allow the guard to fend off a direct attack from 'enemies of the town' also foil your attempts to hear anything.

"Oh, I see," Catra chuckles, and pulls open the door. If it happens to smack into Chad's eavesdropping head, purely by accident, of course... well, these things happen.
She sashays into the barracks, and takes a look around, hoping to find a friendly face. Some of the guards take such stringent views of past misunderstandings...

Chad takes the door from Catra and bows his head a bit as she walks in. A queer sort of smile comes upon his face, and he slides into the room behind her.
I saw the call for a Streetwise check and the post asking if I could read the private messages, but didn't notice anything identifying either as private, so... Secure Rolls: Streetwise 1d20(7)+9 = 16

As you both enter the building, you see the stilted man at the Day Sargent's desk in half hysterics about a group of 5 claiming to be looking for the orphans tearing up his place. He then accuses them of not doing thier jobs, because if they did, they're wouldn't be all these 'would be investigators' nosing around and harassing everyone in town. He doesn't know what's worse, the abductors, the ineffective guard, or the wannabees that roam the city.
Well, of course this doesn't go well with the sargent. And the sargent takes offence of being accused of not doing his job, so he waves Keygan off and says 'Yes', and 'OK' and giving the Gnome lip service as he rants on. When Keygan is done yelling, the sargent cooly responds.. which irritates Keygan more.. "Yes, Yes, I'll send someone to investigate as soon as I can. All of our constibles are currently engaged... and I can't just pull our guards from the wall..."
With a Huff, the Gnome "you better!" and under his breath mutters "Useless bastard." as he turns to leave. He doesn't give you any notice as he passes you again and exits.

NEWS from both the "Real Scoop" and the "Gazeeter"
Orphans Latest Victims as Kidnappings Continue In the latest kidnapping incident in Cauldron, four orphan children were taken from the Lantern Street Orphanage. Despite Captain Skellerang’s assurances that his best man sergeant Krewis is trying to find the missing persons, Cauldron’s citizens worry that there are nefarious forces at work in and around the city proper. A quick survey on the streets will offer the seeker any number of possible explanations from the mundane to the bizarre.
Some say a secret guild of Halfling rogues is responsible for the robberies and kidnappings, but up to now evidence is scarce.
Coryston Pike, one of the kidnapped victims, feared for her life days before she vanished.Coincidence? I think not!
"A cloaked figure collided with me in the street and knocked me down. She uttered some horrible curse, glared at me with her ghostly face and haunting blue eyes, then strode off." reports one local who chose to remain anonymous.
Captain Skellerang denies rumors of an evil cult that has taken residence in Cauldron and is sacrificing kidnap victims to Morkoth, the creature rumored to live in Cauldron Lake. "Hogwash!" states Captain Skellerang. "Morkoth is a child’s story as is, let alone some fantasy cult. We'll get to the real culprit."
The church of Aumanator has vowed to locate the missing children and bring the kidnappers to justice.
New Tax Plan Unveiled Terri Stanheort, Chancellor of the Exchequer, has announced a change in the tax code--the first change in 15 years. According to documents attained by the Herald it is the wealthy citizens that will be most affected by the change. On top of the usual tariffs on goods imported from other lands, the city will now be taking a modest fee on luxury items. According the Exchequer, luxury items include delicacy meals, ornate jewelry and art, and other non-necessary items of splendor. A new inheritance tax has also been declared, that being 1 silver on the gold.
Most citizens are ok with the tax increases, stating security as a justifiable reason. "We need guards and investigators to figure out and prevent these hear kidnappings. That costs money.
Those rich high mucky mucks can help front some of the blow in my opinion." says one local fisherman. Local merchants and trading houses however are concerned that this could be the first of many tax increases in the coming year.

Krylscar Endercott (male human, age 24): Kicked out of the local milita for drunk and disorderly conduct, Krylscar vanished from his parents’ home 74 nights ago. Neither parent hear or saw anything suspicious, but they believe Krylscar may have robbed them and fled the town in disgrace.
