Knowing that she isn't the best in hand-to-hand combat, Lunia decides to move deep into the room and will try to allow those that are better with swords and the like get in there and do some damage. As she moves, she yells out to Sharra, "Sharra! Trip!"

Lunia will fight defensively to allow the others of her group to try and get into the room.

Sorry for the delay everyone!

Round 2 -

Sharra's Jaws clamp onto the Shifter 3's leg tightly as she drags him to the ground. (Shifter 1: -4HP, prone)

Finally able to predict the Warforged's movements, Klem lands a solid blow that penetrates deep. (Warforged: -7HP)

Cathbadh draws a clipping of holy from his spell component pouch, touching the sprig to the Luas' claws. Uttering a short incantation, the spell is completed.

Cathbadh points at a target and Luas takes flight. The hawk flies past the Warforged, avoiding his attack of opportunity, and dives at Shifter 2. Just as Luas gets close, the Shifter quickly swats the hawk out of the air like a cat. (Luas -5HP) Luas falls to the ground with a soft thump. Luas is dying!

As Shifter 3 rises back to his feet, Sharra fails to bite him again. Fortunately, the attack does manage to prevent the shifter from tearing into her with his claws.

With the combatants along her path occupied, Lunia effortlessly moves into a position where she can pepper her targets with arrows from behind. (If you don't like the position it can be changed.)

With Klem watching her flank, Zazi backs to the southern wall and thrusts her spear into the side of Shifter 2 (Shifter 2: -6HP).

Rowelliam reads aloud the words of power inscribed upon the scroll. As the last phrase of the the spell is completed, the warforged is gripped with unimaginable fear. He turns and starts to run. With his back towards Klem, the warforged fails to see the Halberd coming for him. A single sweep, and the warforged falls to the ground and goes inert.

The clockwork mechanism hidden in the warforged's mechanism springs to life. A disk pops into the air, spreads thin wings and attempts to dart deeper into the sewers. (Zazi can make an attack of opportunity if she wishes)

Satisfied with the outcome, Rowelliam moves into the room near Zazi and Klem.

With their employer disabled, the Shifters have no reason to stick around. Shifters 1 and 2 double-move deeper into the sewer.

*Edit* Zazi jabs her spear-point into Shifter 2 as he flees. The weapon significantly injures him, but not enough to halt his escape. (Shifter 2: -5HP)

While it would seem rather stupid to try to take down a small flying object with a spear, Zazi will take a second to reflexively swat at it like a fly with her empty right palm while she is busy leaning into the enemy shifter with her weight and the strength of her stronger left arm to shove her spear deeper into his chest if she can - or she stumbles towards where he used to be if he manages to slip away from her.

She doesn't much care if she grabs the mechanical flying bug or not, more concerned with the fate of the man on the other end of her weapon. She wants to capture at least one of the shifters alive as a matter of vengeance (ooc: let that be read as her saving her AoO to strike the fleeing shifter, if that's not too much of a metagame issue - if it is, he can just run away I guess, and she swats at the buggy). She had expected only warforged to impede their progress. To see flesh and blood creatures in the service of the Clanker King (as she calls him) burns her up considerably, and she won't be happy until she knows why.

In either case, assuming Shifter 2 is no longer in the battle, Zazi advances on the prone shifter threateningly, knocking Shifter 2 down and out of her way with her right elbow if she has to, and bringing her spear up high over her head so that the tip points straight down at him. He may have time to get up before she gets into a position to threaten him, but she's going to make sure by her demeanor that he doesn't dare take an offensive action against Sharra, herself, or anyone else. If he can get away with his life before she can reach him, then so be it.

By that I mean she takes a 5' step towards him, if he's still there on her turn, and readies an attack action against him if he makes any kind of attack action next round. "STAY DOWN!!", she hollers forcefully in a loud soprano not often heard coming from her throat (as her voice is normally an alto). Her eyes bulge slightly in orcish rage, showing their whites clearly, as she stares at the shifter murderously with her spear at the ready. She was never very skilled at the subtle intimidation practiced by criminals and lawmen she'd observed around the city, but she knew the inherent persuasive power of a weapon or a balled fist held high at the ready, and in her youth relied mostly on that to influence others to her point of view. This situation should be no different, she wagers.

Lunia's move worked. She was able to move into the room and get into a good position to where she could use her composite bow more effectively. She draws another arrow and fires at on of the fleeing Shapeshifters and hitting the wall behind them.

Sharra and Klem's actions might change things. So rather than deal with a series of retcons, I went ahead and rolled them and I'm going to post them now. If Zazi wants to change her action, she can. The rushing water doesn't affect Lunia's action much. She simply stands up again if she is knocked down and then fires her bow.

Round 3 Sharra and Klem's actions -

Sharra bites into Shifter 3, tripping him once again.

The valve next to Lunia opens up, releasing a torrent of stored run-off. (Lunia needs to make a reflex save DC 15 to remain standing)

Klem approaches Shifter 3, raises his halberd, spins the haft, and slams the blunt end against the Shifter's head.
"He'll wake up in a minute or so, enough time to take care of his friends."

Map changed to reflect actions.

Seeing the downed shifter disabled by Klem, and a rush of water blocking her view of the other two fleeing shifters (not to mention their being too far away to hit with her spear anyways), Zazi ignores the escapees and instead steps around to the other side of Shifter 3. Glancing around and noticing the lines of valves all around them, she grumbles worriedly and looks at Klem, glancing briefly at the nasty wound on him.

"Let's drag him away from those valves", she suggests, and then looks at Sharra to see how willing the animal is to back away. She tries to shoo it back by motioning subtly with the blunt end of her spear, but doesn't want to appear too threatening for fear she'll provoke it to attack her.

She reaches down and locks her right arm under the shifter's right shoulder, still holding her bloody spear in her left hand, and tries to lift his upper body that way to drag him back towards the stairs. The claw wounds on her arm start to bleed a little more as her muscle flexes, causing blood to trickle down to her elbow. The last thing she needs is for it to be splashed with filthy water and get infected. If Sharra doesn't back off on her own, Zazi hopes at least that when she stoops down and imposes her shoulder between the wolf and the shifter, that the message will becomes clear.

After finding three large enough pieces of stone he liked the look of, Cathbadh had began to advance up the stairs cautiosly, and was thinking of casting Magic Stone when he had heard Luas' pained screech. Eyes widening in a mix of shock and fear, Cathbadh started to dart up the stairs, but managed to control himself, slowing down and arming himself with one of the stones, though it wouldn't be much use without the spell.

Upon reaching the top he quickly noted that the others seemed to have things under control, and then spotted Luas lying in the water. Cursing quite loudly (Cathbadh usually doesnt do either: curse or talk loudly), he runs over to Luas, and after standing there in a panic for a few seconds he picks him up carefully out of the water, and moves him away from the vents, placing him down near the others. He then stares at Luas, the worry in his eyes clearly visable to anyone who looks, while he tries to get his thoughts straight.

Seeing the the enemies are either unconscious or fleeing, Rowelliam quickly scans the carnage left from the fight. A few of his friends are damaged, but there is little he can do about that, which makes him frown a bit. "Gonna have to make some scrolls to deal with that" he quietly says to himself.

He then moves over to Cathbadh and Luas. "Let me help you with him." Rowelliam is not exactly sure how to bandage up a bird or exactly what is needed, but he will do his best to assist and follow Cathbadh's lead. (aid another)

As soon as the shifter falls, Sharra backs down. Zazi and Klem start to drag the unconscious shifter away from the sewer valves and Cathbadh and Rowellian tend to Luas.

Meanwhile, as the remaining two shifters continue to run off, Lunia draws her bow. Just as she is about to fire, the sewer valve next to her opens, knocking her to the ground. Lunia stands back up, firing a poorly aimed shot that strikes the corner just after the shifters have rounded it.

It isn't until the shifter is away from the valves that Klem begins to feel the severity of his wounds. Up to this point, the pain had been masked by the adrenaline of combat. Klem's knees buckle. He grasps at the puncture wound in his rib-cage, backing up to the wall. Wheezing for breath, Klem slides his back down the wall until he is in a seated, knees-up position.

"Bastards... They were in wait. How'd they know we'd be here?"

As she put down the shifter's limp body, Zazi had been distracted looking down the tunnel at Lunia, for a moment wondering if she'd have to run out there to back her up if the fleeing enemies decided to turn around suddenly. Thankfully, and probably better for them, they didn't.

As she looks back at her other companions, she sees Klem lurching, and exclaims, "Oh!", with a look of concern on her face. With the shifter out of her grasp, she sidles over to Klem and puts a re-assuring hand on his shoulder, leaning her spear up against the wall beside him for now so that she has both hands free.

"I'm gonna find out as soon as this furball wakes up", she says, checking over Klem's wound but knowing next to nothing about what to do for him except catch him if he falls. She glances to Cathbadh to see if he can help, but notes the druid seems to be preoccupied with his bird. She glances down briefly at the broken warforged sprawled about under their feet, and then back to Klem's wound. "Hey, thanks for having my back, I can't believe I didn't see him", she says to him with a sincere smile, something that's become increasingly easier the more she's gotten used to looking at his disfigured face.

Later on when healing has been sorted out and she's sure Klem isn't going to spontaneously die on her, Zazi will turn her attention back to the shifter they captured. Before she wakes him, she'll ask Lunia to stand nearby with Sharra and a blade ready to back her up in case the shifter starts fighting back and it turns into a big grapple. "Sorry, there, I should have warned you the King of Clankers is after us", she tells the elf, motioning with her left arm to the scrapped warforged.

Drawing her new punching dagger from its place on her hip, Zazi crouches down over the shifter and studies his face for a moment. Then she scoops up some water with her right hand and splashes it across his face. As soon as she sees signs of him coming around, she plants her right knee on his chest to pin him down, and fits her right hand under his jaw in a choke hold. With her left hand holding the dagger poised and easily visible over his face, she holds him in that position for a moment and glares at him to discourage him from struggling too much, wanting him calm before she starts asking questions.

"Thanks" Cathbadh mumbles at Rowelliam, as they work on Luas. After they manage to stabilise his condition, Cathbadh, still crouching down beside Luas, looks around at the others and their injuries, especially Klem's, and sighs. "So now what?" he asks Rowelliam, "Luas wont wake up for a while, Klem seems seriously injured, all my healing spells were used up on my leg this morning, and were in the midddle of a sewers full of people who want us dead"

He directs his attention towards the unconcious shifter, a wry smile appearing on his face, as he waits for a reply he doubts he'll be satisfied with.

Shrugging his shoulders, Rowelliam on the corner of his bottom lip for a few moments while he thinks.

"I think you are right." Then louder so the others can also hear he continues, "Cathbadh has a valid point, we are pretty beat up to continue further into the sewers. And we have no other healing magic today. And we know there are at least two more enemies who are ahead of us, those shifters."

Taking a breath he continues with his thoughts, "our enemies apparently know where we are going, but are still trying to stop us, so presumably do not have, or know how to find what we are looking for themselves. So, it would not hurt us to search these bodies, retreat for now, sleep, heal up, maybe get some healing magic, and try this again another time. What do you think all?"

With Rowelliam's assistance, Cathbadh stops the bleeding and stabilizes Luas.

The shifter regains consciousness to find himself being pinned down by an irate half-orc who has one hand around his throat and the other holding a knife pointed at his face.

For a moment he considers struggling, but realizes that he's in no position to. Shifting talents exhausted, abandoned by his friends, and surrounded by people whom he just tried to kill, the shifter relents to what he sees as a hopeless situation. Beads of sweat drip from his brow and mix with the fetid sewer water that still clings to his face. A small amount of the putrid mixture drips past his lips and on his tongue, intensifying the fear induced nausea - yet, he dares not retch.

The shifter opens his mouth to speak, but stops. He decides that he shouldn't talk unless spoken to.

Zazi agrees with the assessments offered by Cathbadh and Rowelliam, and was just about to suggest the same. She gives a look of disagreement at Klem regarding the idea of resting down here, but agrees to wait until they interrogate their prisoner before they discuss it further.

Once the shifter is suitably frightened and has agreed not to fight for a period of about 5 seconds during which Zazi just glares at him, the irate half-orc demands, "Why?!", with a twitch of her raised arm in idle threat, but no serious intent to harm the man, "What are they paying you?"

That will do as an opener, but through her questioning she intends to find out if any other shifters are working for the warforged besides him and the other two (and if so, how many), and how much the shifters were told about her and her allies, how they knew where to ambush them, if there are more ambush points set up further down, etc. Finally, she asks him for his name, and in doing so will completely change her tone.

Zazi wagers that whatever these guys are being offered, it pales in comparison to the 1000gp she expects to see, and plans to use that as leverage. Ultimately, after assessing how much the shifter stands to gain or lose from his employment, and how readily he answers questions, Zazi will want to try to buy him and his friends off by offering him more money (plus his life and freedom) in exchange for information about the lower levels and the activities of the warforged, and of course a guarantee of safe passage if there are more shifters out there than just the ones she saw. That is, useful information buys his freedom and good faith to bargain, and co-operation against the warforged enemies buys him a promise of gold. She'll stress that they haven't killed either of his friends, and have no desire to do so.

She'll defer to Rowelliam's judgement to try to determine if the prisoner is lying or not in any of his answers.

The shifter doesn't hesitate answering questions, in fact he volunteers as much information as he has. In his mind, it could be his only way out of this alive - if they were going to kill him any way they would have beat him first. Besides, someone deserves a little payback for putting them in a position that worse than what they had planned for.

"The 'forged there put us on the lookout for a group of top-siders asking questions. Happened to notice you asking questions to Skakan, so we leaned on him a bit. You must have pissed him off something fierce, no one uses that passageway - at least not all the way to the sewers."

"When we went back to the 'forged to report, he wanted us to help him rob ya. Figured you to be an easy mark, a least after the goblin told us where you were headed. Skakan figured you wouldn't make it through without the floor collapsing on ya. Probably loose one or two along the way; sounded about right. All the 'forged wanted was some stupid book, said we could keep the rest."

"With the gear you carry we could eat for a month. If that wasn't enough we'd just rob Rapier that other 'forged when they got done with whatever they were doing down here. Sure Raiper was tough enough, but the other didn't stick around for the fight. How tough could he be?"

"Sounded like a good deal. Instead all I got is blood in my piss for the next couple of weeks. Stupid forged hadn't even paid us for being on the lookout yet."
