Well, I've been watching it with my fellow CharOppers, bit I haven't gotten on myself. They actually just unplugged the damn server and pout a message up.
I've managed to catch some of the stuff that CharOppers cached, though. And if it implies what I think it does, I am FURIOUS.

This has been coming for a while, folks. All it means is that the number of 3.5 players will peak out a few years from now. We can still keep gaming.

Well, that'll still be really useful, Bob. People'll still play 3.5, and not everyone's gonna wanna subscribe to this stupid D&D Insider thing.

Ok, the DnDInsider thing seems like a cheap ploy. IMHO its wizards way of ensuring they get paid (by making content available only through a paysite). It makes it harder for someone to PDF a book and distribute it. Which I think in the long run only hurts Wizards, because there will be less interest.
I suppose there is about a 10% chance they could really do a good job of the whole web tie-in system, but I'm not counting on it.
Still can't reach the wizards website for official news.

Wizards website is finally up. Here's what I like:
* 30 levels of core content * Races have meaning at higher levels * Streamlined play
Here's what I'm not so sure about:
* Subscription content - still seems like a scam to me. D&D needs to go open source :) * Character generators / gaming table - if done right, this will be great (and in turn may really hurt the PbP community). If done wrong (much more likely in my opinion) this will stagnate the game. * Simplified system - Don't get me wrong, I'm in favor of making play easier...but I hope they didn't oversimplify it to the point where it takes the fun out of character building and advancement, and takes the diversity out of play.

I think it is stupid that they are releasing the core books in three different months. Its like they're rushing just to say its out, but you still can't play for another two months.
Other than that I am a bit worried about it, but willing to wait until I see it to give any real opinion on it.

They did the same staggered release with 3E and 3.5. (My memories of the 80's is a bit of a haze, so I can't say for sure what happened when 2E Revised came out.)
Based on the verylimited information available at this time, just about the only thing I see that I don't like is the deliniation between fighters based on the weapon they chose. Seems too limiting to me. I'm not opposed to deliniation based on fighting styles, just on weapons. But, it's waaaay to early to make dismissive remarks based on limited info. I'll just have to wait for the books and give the game a fair shake before deciding which side of the fence I'll land on.

I'm cautiously optimistic, but still a little angry at how I've been treated as a consumer of WotC products.
While it certainly sounds like there is some cool stuff in 4th Edition, I'm a bit wary of how it will be packaged. Let me echo Bob's concern about "Subscription Content". Let's just hope that some of the nastier rumors about the Digital Initiative with D&D Insider are false, as they certainly are worrisome to hear.

If I may add to this. Subscription Content could mean they are putting Dungeon Magazine and Dragon Magazine as available online. I may point out that they did cancel their contracts with both magazines not more than 2 months ago. And on the OOTS! forums they said that they were moving the magazines online as a web-access read as part of some very special project that was going down. This was mentioned on OOTS! because the OOTS! special edition comic strip which was going to run in Dragon magazine was canceled. There was also some talk of OOTS! becoming available online on this alternate website when the time comes.

From what I'm seeing, I suspect the game is going to fork here. You're going to get a basic game (4E) and a more complex one (3.5).

The thing they've been saying here at the Con about DDI is that it will enhance the books released, and give authors a venue to publish things that might not otherwise be published, without limiting what is published. For example, since there is no publishing cost, articles about various areas of FR can be put up. It does look like a lot of the current site features will become DDI content, so the random free articles and such will cost, but the physical books shouldn't change. They also "announced" that the price will be between the cost of a month of Dungeon or Dragon, and a month of an MMO, so $6-$14.
They also are pushing per encounter abilities, as well as continuous and per day, but they are trying to get rid of
0800 Everybody wakes up, wizard/cleric/druid/etc begins preparing spells 0900 Everybody is ready, party enters first "encounter" Encounter is awesome. Everybody has tons of options, uses a lot of abilities, the monsters are varied and cool, and there's terrain all of the place. 0915 Everybody is out of resources and its time to rest again.
Supposedly, players will be "rewarded" for continuing more in a day, beyond just regaining per encounter abilities. There are also things similar to "action dice" that also you to do "cool" stuff, but they wouldn't elaborate.
CR is slightly changing, in that encounters are "balanced" around an equal number of CR N creatures as level N PCs. All classes and monsters will have defined roles. So if a class x shows up, they know what party role they should fill with their class. They are trying to get rid of 5th wheel classes.

Looks like a money-making venture to me designed to squeeze yet more money from gamers. Knights of the Dinner Table ran a strip joking about that. Looks like they weren't far off the mark.

Sorry, I got distracted with 4E and stopped talking about the DDI. There will also be a character creator, that supports all new content as released, a character visualizer, similar to in MMOs, and a "table." The table allows you to draw maps or use premade tiles, but itself does not include any rules. So you can have icons moving across the map, but they look a little better. The character visualizer will include miniatures/monsters as well as an option to shrink your character to a "miniature."
