The year is 2085. A little over sixty years ago we worried about overpopulation, of the stress inflicted on our changing planet. But then the light of mankind was nearly extinguished in the first Arcanotech war. We were saved by little more than luck. In an attempt to remain concealed the migou created an artificial subspecies of humanity to wipe us out. Though the damn things had study and experimented upon us for centuries they did not understand the human spirit.
On the threshold of our extinction the Nazzadi rebelled against the designs of their creators and surrendered to humanity.
Integration, acceptance, of the Nazzadi happened quicker that one would have expected. Though there is still some discrimination and mistrust. War, nay survival, makes for strange bedfellows and, few are as fanatical or vicious against the migou as a nazzadi warrior..
In the wake of near extinction the tattered remnants of humanity came together as never before to form the New Earth Government. To have done otherwise would have ment destruction when the 2nd wave, the 2nd Arcanotech war began.
The Migou took the arctic first with almost no fight, Russia fell swiftly, Scandinavia fell soon afterwards, while northern Canada and Alaska are all but lost.
When exactly the 2nd Arcanotech War became the Aeon War is hazy. Some place it as when the Rip tore through Jerusalem. Others establish it as when the Rapine Storm, an army of monsters worshiped by cultists began to tear through Asia and South America. Still others say it began when the Esoteric Order of Dagon rose from the depths to lay claim to the ocean and most of the coastlands.
Game/setting specific things:
HERCs, short for HERCULANs (Humaniform-Emulation Roboticized Combat Unit with Leg-Articulated Navigation) and Mecha, are basically used as interchangeable terms, but while all HERCs are Mecha, not all Mecha are HERCs. (HERCs are specifically bipedal and humanoid in design, Mecha can be bipedal but has a lot more variety in form).
Is publicly known to exist and is highly regulated and requires permits. Magical potential is tested for in childhood. Most know a ritual or two, some know more rituals, a few know thaumaturgy. What is especially rare is the ability to channel, or even evoke, power directly. Rather than through the (comparatively safe) 'circuit' of ritual or thaumaturgy.
Those who use magic walk a tightrope, risking their life and sanity for the sake of power.
The White Council of Wizards was all but wiped out, and essentially is no more. The mere handful of individuals that survived the 1st Arcanotech made contact with the emerging NEG and were involved with the start of the Office of Internal Security.
The Faerie Courts are no more, no one knows if they withdrew, are in hiding, or (more frighteningly) were destroyed.
No one on record has returned from the Nevernever with life, or sanity, still attached. . .
